Engine Transplant - 3SGE - 3SGTE

Postby celica_xr9145 » Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:47 pm

Hi, i got a couple of questions.

Well as my celica st183 is quite high milaege, im thinking in the future of replacing the 3sge with a 3sgte from a st185.

The celica is a st183 with 4WS and TEMS Suspension and i read on previous topics on toyspeed that these run on seperate systems so they wont be a problem.

What i want to ask is what is involved.
Obviously i got to buy the engine but what else do i need?
I heard i need the ecu and the wiring loom.

Does it matter that it will be coming out of a 4WD into a FWD?

Will a ST205 GT4 engine fit in, i know it wont be plug and play but will it be simple or will it be a whole new wiring loom, ecu, etc.
If easier, it can be another turbo engine, whatever easiest.

Also, do components need to be moved such as the battery and do mechanics do these sort of things or is it something i have to do myself?

How much money would i be looking at with handing it over to a mechanic? I have done some searching at 3SGTE engine and there around from $1000.

I have read the previous topics on toyspeed but i just wanted a little bit more detail.

Many Thanks,
Jamie

pretty much the only 3sgte you'll find that is readily available is ones from ST215 caldina's, which you could use, you'll require an aftermarket ecu to make it run. fair bit of work and $$$ involved, does your st183 mean that much to you? if not, sell it and buy a gt4

It is cheaper to sell your 183 and buy 185. Hell you will even afford 205 if you have money for transplant, and no Turbo 183 will handle like an 205 ;).

Actually converting an St182 to turbo is very easy, a previous forum member jools did it to his with good results.
You will need an ST185 3SGTE, ecu and loom and also the bonnet to supply air to the intercooler unless you wanted to front mount the ic.
The loom plugs straight in and you use your existing gearbox and engine mounts and that's pretty much it but try searching for forum member jools for more information.
