Will Bluetop head fit 20V Block?

Postby Allister S » Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:00 pm

Hey guys, I'm wondering if I can rebuild a full Bluetop engine with a Silvertop or Blacktop 20 Valve block, Oil pump and sump?

1. Will my Bluetop head bolt on? Which head bolts do I use? What head gasket?

2. Will my Bluetop crank fit the block? Will the 20V Oil pump fit the Bluetop Crank?

3. What about oil drains? Piston Squirters(need blanking off)? VVT oil supply need blanking off??

4. Oil filter fitting? Bluetop Water pump fit to 20V block?

5. Is the block height exactly the same??

Thanks, Al

Yes it will fit, with Bluetop gasket and head studs.

2. Will my Bluetop crank fit the block? Will the 20V Oil pump fit the Bluetop Crank?
crank will fit block, but rods will not fit crank, presume oil pump ok, but not 100% sure.

3. What about oil drains? Piston Squirters(need blanking off)? VVT oil supply need blanking off??
No worry's with any of it. Leave squirters in, nothing else to blank off.

4. Oil filter fitting? Bluetop Water pump fit to 20V block?
will all fit ok.

5. Is the block height exactly the same??
yes

Thanks for that.

Looking at using my Bluetop Crank, Rods and pistons(new) in a Silvertop block. I want to use the 20V oil pump as mine is pretty filthy.

My Blutop rods have Squirters as well? No problems with this?

Anything else to look out for?

the pistons need cutouts for the squirters, i suspect your bluetop pistons wont have them

can probably get some machined in

Silvertop engine has spun 2 Big End bearings and damaged 2 rods and the crank.

Also early bluetop stuff is lighter (Crank and rods I think), and it's going to be a tidied up, rebuilt road car engine, so no need for extra strength.

There's an interesting writeup on Club4AG with a guy doing a "Blue print" Bluetop and using the Bluetop stuff with a later 7 rib block. Apparently Bluetop crank 1kg lighter than later ones.

Should know soon how Bluetop stuff mixes with Silvertop.........

Would definitely need machining done for the pistons if using bluetop items. But yes as Matt said , it all works. even the 20v oil pump.

So it looks like the Bluetop pistons need a cutout in the skirt to clear the oil Squirters or I could blank them off. Any opinoins???

Good news on the pump as I wanted to use the 20V one.

Hmmmmm, anyone got some 256 or 264 cams :D ?

You could either get slots machined in the pistons to clear the oil squirter nozzlles or, do what i did and cut the squirters off, braze up the holes and bolt them back into the 20v block. They wouldn't really be of any use other than to stop excess oil flowing out the oil galleries.

Will need to definitely, positively confirm that it is an actual 20v pump i tries. I'll have to try bluetop and 20v items. As i thought i had a 20v pump on the bluetop crank.
Will post back later once i can confirm

Hey Allister, i checked earlier tonight and the 20v oil pump looks same as the 16v oil pumps to look at externally. Fit both the 42 and 40mm cranks no probs 8)
Same end on both styles crank where the pump slides on and the pump slots are same.
