The Mystery of my Silvertop (no longer a mystery)

Postby MR2BOY23 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 6:30 pm

Thought I'd post this in here rather than tech questions cause I no longer own the car, but always wondered what the f*** was wrong with it lol.

Well it all started one day when I was driving home and I reved it to the redline. When it hit the redline, the whole car just turned off, steering and brakes locked up which was scary luckily I wasnt going to fast though. So I pulled over and tried to get it started but it wouldn't. I Left it for a couple of hours and came back and managed to get it started though it didn't run the same (idling strangely, jerky when I drove it)

A few weeks later I was driving down to maraetai and I was going up a hill. I put my foot down again, it dropped a gear, revd to redline again and did the exact same thing fully turned off. Stuck on the side of the road, never managed to get it started. Took it home didnt start. Got my uncle to look at it found that it needed a new igniter and coil..

Got it started after that but ever since that it drove weird, in 1st gear when it hit like 5000rpm it got really really jerky and wouldnt rev passed that. Sorry about the long post but I've always wondered what happend to it and what caused the igniter and coil to f*** out and what led to the car just turning off.

Thanks toyspeeders

sounds to me like it went into limp mode. my gtz did that. capacitors in the ecu had melted so got new ones and it was fine. you could have hit the rev limit and it sent a bung signal to the ecu so it didnt know wot the problem was and went into limp mode to protect itself.

Damn, I decided against posting to say it was the flux capacitor overheating which was half (possibly) right

That sounds about right as the engine wasnt running. Nothing to pump PS fluid and no vacuum for the brakes.

I reckon check doagnostics. Also, look over piping for cracks in the intake path after the AFM. Make sure things are all bolted secure also. could be a possibility too..

Have you have some work done recently? Repairs/Maintainence? Did you do it yourself? If either, what was it?

Well the cars been gone for over 6 months now so cant really check anything on it, just never got around to finding out exactly was wrong with it, just repaired what needed to be to get it started and it was sold.

A week or two before all this happening though, I put on the pod filter and the air flow meter was also removed for a short while, I always thought that mite have had something to do with it

removing the airflow meter and running the engine will log a ECU fault code and it may not run the same. i found that on my BZG, disconnected stuff while running, started running like shit one day, cleared codes (all of which were from me disconnecting shit, bar o2 sensor) an it ran sweet as

Yeah, Ive been reading the posts and I think thats exactly what happend, only wish I knew then what I do now. Most likely the jerkyness at 5000rpm had something to do with the vvt
