where to get axles shortend?

Postby 79rolla » Wed Feb 18, 2009 5:37 pm

heya, i got a hilux dif today, took it and my ke30 diff round to loacail engenering place and they sed they cant do it.

so my question is who can do it to certabail standard for a decent price?

needs about 800mm taken off each side i think, mounts changed, driveshaft shortend and stud pattern changed if posabail..

if its going to cost too much, who wants an lsd surf diff

(btw im only doubiling power to what standard motor could do)

Also keen to know this.

I think a hilux diff might be overkill though?

overkill is good!! means if i $&#$% with it later i wont have to change diff again..

but there is a point where if it costs to much it just wont be worth it.. and ill just see what happens to an auto 3k diff..

Don't know of anyone off hand down your way but I've alays used either Diff-Spesc(1st Choice) or Diffs-R-Us here in Auckland.

You could try Tynan's or one of the other V8/Drag people around Hamilton. Else DereK Mitchell @ Mitchell Race Extreme(Think that's what he call's his company these days). These are cheap options but you should get it done right the first time.

Why not sell your hilux diff and find one that is the right size to start with?

I got an early model Hilux diff for my ae86 and it only worked out as being 10mm wider on each side once it was converted to fit the car and have been chnaged to a s13 disk break set up

Thread Hijack:

I was told that a Corona (ST141?) diff would go straight into a DX with the mounts moved? Anymore info on that?

Will cost a lot to do all that. Taking 800mm off each axle will leave you with nothing though so maybe 80mm

Or just roll FWD mags on the back and flares. Then run spacers on the front so you can use FWD up there too.

Another option 8)

haha yeah my bad, 80mm

dont think even fwd mags would fit very well.. (and i dont realy want to rool the gauds atm..)

are some hilux diffs (older leaf spring ones) closer in size to the ke30 size?

anything that i could actuly find that will fit better??

you might find an F series axle a better fit

lighter than G (hilux) with plenty of power handling ability.

a T series would probably be the easiest option, but the purchase price these days is pretty outrageous compared to other options.

I got this done for my diff. I had to go to two different places. Berry Racecars in Upper Hutt to shorten the casing and move the mounts. That was $100 four years ago.
They sent me to Whakatiki engineering to shorten the half shafts. This was the expensive bit, might have been as much as $200 per shaft(it was a long time ago). But they had the equipment to cut splines on a shaft. Apparently there are two methods of cutting the splines.
Heat the shaft to remove the temper(hardening) where you are going to cut the splines and re-temper it when its all done. I think this is harder but it saves the cutting bit thing.
Or the method they used on mine. Cut the splines without removing the temper, this method is easier but it is destructive on the (expensive)cutting bits. Hence the cost. But there is no chance of $&#$% up the re-tempering of the shaft(and bending it).

Someone correct me if this is wrong and I was fed poos and wees.

Another note....I think I might have had an st141 diff.....maybe. They couldnt shorten the original half shafts. The shaft got narrower just after the spline then got thick again so there was no metal right where the new spline needed to be cut :(
I ended up at pick a part pulling out all the rwd halfshafts till I found one with a bigger diameter spline/shaft and the same size bearing that they could use. Might have been a corona wagon....it had leaf springs, I wasnt paying attention to the cars, just the axles.
I removed 25mm from each side.

Irrelevant information. YAY!! :D

BTW: Overkill is too HEAVY! WTF does a hilux axle WEIGH?!
