Helmet recommendations?

Looking for advice on helmets. What brands are good, which are bad etc, where to buy from.

Specifically a full helmet with visor.

I have an HJC that I'm pretty happy with, nice and comfortable, reasonably affordable, simple looks, and conforms to standards that I need it to. What do you want the helmet for? Racing cars or a bike?

Something to note is that a lot of motorbike helmets don't have fireproof liners, so there is a danger if you're stuck in a burning car that you might get nylon melted to your face if you don't have a balaclava :)

Make sure you check out the standards requirements for your series, getting a helmet with the right standard can be a real bastard if local standards aren't acceptable (there were stuff all DOT/Snell rated helmets in my price range when I got mine, and European Standards and Australasian standards aren't allowed in the FSAE rules).

Just what your budget is.. I can get you a dedicated karting helmet by Arai. Fireproof, etc..

From the regulations:

The following are the minimum Racing Helmet Standards approved for Karting Competition in
New Zealand.

Europe: ECE 22-04 or ECE 22-05
Note: ECE 22-04 will only be permitted to be used up to December 2006.
The only labelling on some helmets maybe E3 in a circle. The E is the
homologation mark for ECE 22; the number following (1-16) represents
the country granting the homologation. Either above or below the circle
will be a series of numbers. The first two figures should be 04 or 05
immediately followed by production numbers. The date of manufacture
can sometimes be found on the buckle or on the back of the helmet.

+1 for Arai.

Outstanding helmets .. had mine when i had my old bike... and honestly its your head/brain people... spend the money get something that is going to do the job.


Mate of mine bought a $149 helmet for his bike ... i nearly slapped him silly with it.

Depends if you want to spend $3000....
To me it's alll wank value. A little carbon fibre tube on the side of your helmet lol.

$700ish, can sort you out tinted visors, etc too.

Sizes are pretty shit at moment, think only S and M available, so have to wait for next shipment or order it in.

GP5W Arai - Stopped stocking the older item, only the new one which comes with HANS anchors, for $1300
Sizes available in all i think

Obviously you'l be restricted by standards and price, just as important is to get one that fits your head well. No point spending all that money on a fancy design if its going to move around or feel uncomfortable so shop around for one that best fits you.

Arai can be fitted with different interiors. So you can have a large shell size for a larger head, but then add padding to make it more snug, or sit lower, etc.
