CT12 vs. CT12a + other mods.

Postby Quint » Sat Feb 28, 2009 6:57 pm

Not really happy with the play in my CT12s so having either to replace or recon.

But while i was at it, i was thinking about the differences between the 12's and 12a's, Whats the differance? Can they be interchanged? I'm confident someone else has attempted this before so will know what i need to do

Also, on the side, Soft mods for the 1G are there any? Don't want big horsepower gain, just a little extra to help push its fat ass, pretty much looking for 'bolt up' mods, eg. turbo/manifold/IC etc. (not to sure if i want to upgrade to single as i'm sure that'll require engine management to be modifed also and multiple 'teething' issues).

Put basically, i'm trying to spend only a few grand and get another 30-50 hp out of her without sacrificing to much drivability or reliability. Anyone know any good places to start?

Again, engine is a 1G-GTE.

Can't be interchanged.

Buy cams for it and make sure the TVIS is working.

Next power upgrade is single turbo and ecu.

there a no off the shelf cams for it. i'd suggest downpipe and exhaust for it and if the budget stretched maybe a y pipe on the standard manifold run a single turbo that way.
The stock ecu will handle around 190kw before it has a fit...
the other option is the blitz turbos that are available as replacements for the ct12. they are popular in aussie.
current cars:
Evo 4 230Kw atw
1971 mini.
79 bugeye 245kw atw.
Evo powered mx5 under construction

Heard a rumor a while back that someone had a template and was fabricating them up for a few hundie, true false?

Also, might as well ask, whats the best 'bang for buck' single turbo and what ratios work best etc. hear people using CT26s and 20s

Thanks for the answers so far :)

Hi flowed ct26's are popular, since they have a good sized comp cover, but depends on what the target is.

the y pipe i reckon i read on either oldschool or possibly garage dori a while back.... sorry i don't have any more info on that one...

twins for a 1ggte... have a look at this.

If you intend on spending 2-3K on upgrading the 1GGTE I'd say that money would be much better spent on upgrading to a 1JZGTE.
The 1G is a great engine but it's always going to lack torque especially in a heavy car. For 3K + the sale of your car you could buy a nice JZA70.
