seeing as I'm now a student(part time at least), I couldn't possibly comment on my fellow students behaviour...

However... back in the day, there was no toga parade/march, just a damn pub crawl.

Why is it that they think that they are so important that they need to have a parade for themselves.

Take some riot gear, and crack some skulls. If that doesn't turn the rest of them away from being utter c**ts in our city, release the police dogs, and see how they like it.

Maybe the cops should have shoulder mounted HD video cameras... would make evidence all the more clear. They were there for the march as it was.

I blame the 2nd year RA's and stuff, they were everywhere. I know that they were at least on the roof of the backpackers on moray place, and the Westpac bank there too.

Its gone too far, throwing shit and rubbish at people is just messed up. Those people need there balls hooked up directly to the generators at benmore.

Though OUSA needs to stand up and take responsibility, though the standard of people that run it, I wouldn't hold my breath on them actually admitting they've let it get out of control ( think Helen Clark or Winston Peters standards of responsibility).

I'm ashamed to call myself a student when stupid stuff like this happens

Thinking a little more seriously about this.
Seeing as the university union and students association organised it, they should be billed for the cleanup.

I don't see why they couldn't put in a code of conduct for university organised events, anything organised by them, shall be their responsibility.

Not that hard surely.

If the uni took a hard line and kicked the morons out, no fee refund would be done, and ban them for 24 months... make it just annoying enough to screw the dumbasses over well and truly.

After 10 or so got kicked out, the rest would fall into line.

come on really? the student union and uni should pay?

given that the rugby union doesn't really want to pay for a stadium
Dunedin city doesn't want to pay to clean the sewage properly

why should the uni pay, Dunedin would be Gore if it didn't have a uni, famous only for inter-family shooting/stabbing and the odd bit of mass killing.

having had to help herd toga students on a toga thing (in the past), the animosity generated by non toga ppl tossing eggs and rubbish, i know if they were doing it to me, id respond in a negative manner(and if i were drunk and with 1000 mates......). and whats more not all the non toga ppl are even students, i saw a good group of what looked like brockville illiterate monkeys, who seemed unhappy that these students had got into uni when they couldn't even pass year 10.

however the organisation this year looked like it was a bit of a shambles.
if you don't plan well for 2000 + semi drunk students anything can happen.... besides i suspect that the TV made it look a lot worse than it really was.

in retrospect it was going to happen sooner or later it was just a matter of time, if nothing was done about the non toga ppl.

I was there, it was that bad, the perpetrators need a good kick in the head.

im sure if a few sensible ppl were given cattle prods (this does include the cops or the students), it would be sorted in no time, it would be fun to boot.

Not that i'm in Dunedin, but I am south island and would rather run the risk of getting a poo thrown at me than live in Auckland

I've heard from various people it wasn't even poo, just mashed up weetbix and things in a bucket.
The ODT decided to call it poo, because it looked like it, and smelt a bit bad. So who knows what it was, the ODT are known to spout crap

Not at all.

OUSA could not really have done anything to predict or prevent what happened.

It's exactly like if we organised a meet and a mixture of uninvited members and non-members crashed it and threw shite and vomit at us (and understandablely we threw back whatever's to hand). Toyspeed would not be liable, and thus neither is OUSA.

And why should the association cover for the individuals that did the damage? Indeed those that did out-of-hand stuff should face the consequences without having OUSA cover for them.

I concur with above. OUSA were out that night with brooms scrubbing down the streets and cleaning shop windows. Their only fault surrounding the incident was the lack of communication with some of the colleges resluting in them arriving early.

We're not saints but I can't say I ever recall boyracers getting so bad that legitimate events (4&Rotary etc) had to consider removing any of the locations from their map........nor do I recall students up here being so rowdy that police are called in....this isn't the first time Otago Uni's been in the news and I'd be surprised if it was the last - it seems the start of each year is marked with some sort of riot/out of control party/poo throwing
