I thought I explained it earlier:

viewtopic.php?p=696450&sid=cb23418145ee83fb9a13dca318b3ac52#696450

People who signed up before the policy was implemented can carry on. There's a fairly obvious line in the sand; all signups and all email address changes post the day of implementation are subject to the policy.

(The Policy has quite successfully blocked a goodly number of abusers and spammers, so i'd say its working nicely.)

The catch is, of course, if your free email address ceases to be useful/functional, you're going to have to supply a 'non-free' alternative or risk your account being suspended.

Sorry I don't find your explanation clear. First up you say people like me who signed up before the policy are exempt, but at the end you say that anyone with an email address that is non-functional risks account-suspension. My email is (deliberately) non-functional so I am exempt or not?

I use a unique email address for toyspeed, I've never used it to send email, but somehow spammers have got hold of it. Because of this I have disabled this address on my mail server and I'm not inclined to re-enable it.

Anyway, email thread and PM notifications are optional at the personal profile level and I have switched them off, which solves your problem does it not? This is probably an ideal solution for others as well.

And surely the board software enables you to switch off bounce notifications? Do they serve any useful purpose that outweighs the inconvenience?

Ok so there's two issues.
1. We're not forcing people who signed up with free email domains that're now banned, to update their email addresses, so long as they keep working (or, to be more honest; so long as we don't notice them failing!).

2. We require valid email contact for administrative purposes (all forum accounts obviously supply one anyway, so we require it to be real, and not invalid) - this also serves as a way to track down individuals in the event of abuse, emergency or what-have-you.

The address you have on file in your profile being invalid, will not be an issue until we try to use it, and have no luck.

I'd suggest you change it, but tweak the setting that hides the email address from forum users. Then it's valid, and in the system, but unlikely to become a spam target. (And I sympathise!)

Anyway, email thread and PM notifications are optional at the personal profile level and I have switched them off, which solves your problem does it not? This is probably an ideal solution for others as well.

Turning off notifications means we're not getting bounces to system events (sub'd threads and PM's, etc) but should we need to communicate with our membership in a more affirmative style (ala to ensure our members actually see it), email would be the tool.

And surely the board software enables you to switch off bounce notifications? Do they serve any useful purpose that outweighs the inconvenience?

The board software has nothing to do with it - it doesn't handle bounces itself. They're just emails. The bounce comes to the person holding the postmaster role on the mail domain concerned (currently me).

I should flag that it's entirely likely that a move will be made to delete inactive users at some stage soon (i've pondered it at various intervals but have never gotten around to it... the mechanics of doing so need to be worked out so as to not accidentally delete accounts that're valid).

Prior to doing so an email would be going out to the membership to warn them about it, in order that they can login and validate their accounts, fix them up, etc etc.

If your email address bounces, we'd likely see your account as an orphan and suspend-or-delete it in amongst the several thousand other idle usernames.

Suffice to say, then:

- We do require valid email addresses (non free as of whenever it was we implemented that policy) from people who join our forum,
- We don't require you to publish them openly (user configurable)
- We're likely to notice a failure to adhere to this policy when bounces occur (so turning off notifications is likely to delay this)
- We're trying to be low-key on this. If we don't have a problem with you, you're likely fine for the indefinate future. Just stay off the radar. :-)
- Should we need to contact you via e mail due to an issue with your account, or for other admin reasons... that'll put you on radar.

Hope this explains a little further.

BJ.

viewtopic.php?t=34474 describes how to contact the right people for enquiries like this one.

Oh and we don't have a spell check? Some browsers run one live, that's likely your system, not ours.
