Well my 17 year old brother has left wellington and gone way down south to Telford Polytechnic. He has his learners and is going to get his restricted as soon as he can (probably when he comes back up in the holidays). The thing is he tells me it is very hard to get around down there without a car. Also what he wants and what would be must useful to him is some kind of 4x4 as he does go hunting etc a lot. What I want to know from you guys is what would you reccommend? Keeping in mind a small budget (i wouldnt say over 3g) and that he would not be the most experienced driver in the world. Any trademe links welcome!

Escudo? Relatively cheap to buy, run, and considered to be fairly capable.

I think some of the engines have reliability issues though, from reading internet wisdom :lol:

Yeah +1 for Escudo, just get some extractors for it if it doesnt already have them.

Another for the Escudo!

A cousin of mine has one and gives it shiiiit! Hasnt died yet... Enough mroom for all the rifles, shotgun etc etc

I had an Escudo before I really knew anything about cars, and lets just say, I can vouch for the engine reliability. The oil light would often come on and I'd top it up enough to go away :oops:

Only thing I had a problem with was that if you locked the front hubs and put it in 4WD mode, it would often pop out. Its because I put it in 4WD on tarmac and its designed for loose conditions. It is rare for it to develop that problem though.
I used to live with my parents, which involved driving some twisty roads. When it was wet, putting it in 4WD made a hell of a lot of difference. I loved it!

mate just bought a escudo with cage and muds on it goes pretty well but gearbox gave up when 4wheelin at mates place he doesnt really know how to drive 4x4, or could build a buggy like another mate is swb safari 1ggte hilux 4x4 box and r33scumline firewall and floorpan :twisted:

+1 for escudo. Mate's parents have one and it has been given hell for the last 5-10years and still stands up. It's only a 1.6 but towed my car out of the manfield car park when everything was getting stuck. Towed heavy trailers on their farm etc. Overheated it one day (off the guage) and kept driving for 5-10minutes to get it home - all they did was let it cool down and top the water up. What ever they did they couldn't kill it

Rare/expensive for a manual one though? That might be just for the 1997 LWB ones though

yea the first thing that came to my mind was an escudo, not too expensive too and a lot of people that want something simple to 4wd seem to go for them. dunno about the safari a, kinda big wouldnt you think? for an inexperienced driver? i would have thort an escudo would be a very good little car to get used to the size and height difference as well as learn the basics of drivin offroad

Escudo - but get the G16B twin cam engine and throw some extractors on it. The stock ones are known to collapse in on them selves.
