Probably the wrong forum to ask on, but I'll try anyway :lol:

I'm very seriously considering swapping the 4K in my DX for something Nissan because of easy power and relative cheapness of parts. I want to build this as a daily car that I can go out and reliably do skids and go sideways a bit in the weekends.

Initially I was thinking SR20de because a mate has one sitting in his shed that I can have for >$200. However it'd be fun to go manual and SR20 Gboxs are very dear. RB20 Gboxs don't cost as much, little enough to make considering a RB20 worthwhile.

I have only been a passenger in a SR20de powered car once and never an RB20de and so I don't know what they drive like. Can anyone help compare them? I'm also wondering about relative weights, SR20 is good for it's all alloy design therefore helping weight balance/handling, however RB has more torque therefore helping skidzzz.

I don't want to have a Nissan vs Toyota debate or a NA vs Turbo debate.

Only good RB is a 26, or a 30/26 hybrid.

does an RB20 make more usable torque than an SR20?

i would say a SR20 would fit in a lot easier, and would certainly be better sized for weight distribution
RB20s have never impressed me, but thats prob more to do with the weight of what they are in than anything else.

SR20 box may be dearer, but its not a race car is it, so your not likely to need to buy another one. and seeing as your getting the engine cheap that off sets that cost....

Sweet, cheers for the input.

Yeah, I hadn't heard alot of good about RB20s, but the HP figures are about the same and they have about a 1/3 more torque so I wondered..

Looks like I might be about to pick up an SR Gbox quite cheap in about 10 mins anyway :lol:

As far as torque goes, it depends what type of SR20DE you get. The early redtop models are rated at around 170nm, whereas the blacktop ones get up to 192nm, which is more than the RB20DE's.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I don't know much about the SR20s, the one I'd get is from an S14..

Torque in N/A engines with 2 cams per head is typically very relative anyway.
You'll usually find that the specific torque is around 100nm per litre, give or take about 5nm

Don't bother with the RB20DE it's more hassle than it's worth. The S14 SR20DE is a better engine with good lowdown torque and it sticks around for a while (feels more "drivable" than an rb20de that just sorta falls flat at 5000rpm). The S14's variable cam timing helps lowdown torque remarkably

This is a dyno sheet of my old S14 with the sr20de. Mods are Intake, Headers, 3" Exhaust (probably lost power/torque with this). By no means a powerful engine but you definitely have a nice wide powerband to play with.

And marginally more than a tweaked blacktop :lol: Though obviously more drivetrain loss etc
I've never driven an RB20DE (That I can recall) but DET's have never impressed me, they have a wicked lack of low end torque and not much up top either, though a better turbo can fix that.

I would have thought weight would be more of a factor...
SR = aluminium block and 4 cylinders
RB = iron block and 6 cylinders

dunno the weight difference, but it got to be noticable in a small car.

yep the rb is heavier over the front and physically takes up a lot of precious engine bay space :lol:........hardly worth what you get in terms of performance - not that you'll be getting much of that with either motor in all honesty

good mate in tga ( yems will know of the car ) got his hands on a ke20 with a sr20det in it

what a weapon

im not a big fan of inter-breeding other makes motors into toyotas etc

but this car changes my mind

very very controlable, qwick

just a fukn weapon

but if your wanting to go n/a which i think is stated here try finding a sr20de autech motor, again a very very good n/a motor

American V8 = boat anchor. Yes they are simple, as in steam engine simple.
There is more to a car than power. Weight comes in equation too when not doing burnouts.
