Actually, get an SR20VE from a late model Primera :D
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Thats' what I was going to say. They're the later VVL engine, 200hp from memory. I've owned plenty of RBs, an RB20DE wouldn't be too bad in a light car, but they're a huge engine, and reasonably gutless. The early SR20s are pretty crap too, 145hp I think?

But yeah, I'd go for as later SR20 as possible, they sorted out the crap oiling system and made plenty more power with the later ones.

The reason I thought I'd go SR is cause I've already got cheap access to one that is proven to be good.

The main reason for Nissan vs. Toyota was the cost:power ratio.

But an RE70 does appeal..

They're also numbingly expensive......for the price of an SR20VE you can pick up an SR20DET......and because it actually came out in factory rwd form you have an endless supply of gearboxes/other parts from RWD cars to pick from....oh and they make more power and torque - and are more capable of doubling/tripling those figures if you're game enough.

The only reason I can see for getting an SR20VE is if you raced in an n/a only class or you wanted to be different. Otherwise it's just a can of worms you don't really want to go near unless you own a Pulsar/Primera

Nothing wrong with the rb20's they're pretty beefy things........they're just old and technology has evolved since their time. It's like comparing a 1g-ge to a blacktop beams 3S

Is W55 a Hydraulic Clutch?

Or more particularly, would the one in Frosty's RT141 be Hydraulic or cable?

It's a 'mare and a half putting an SR20VE into a RWD setup, courtesy of the distributor being in a PITA spot.

And one with intake, cams, exhaust and ECU made less HP (at a higher rpm) at the wheels than my standard beams 3S.

It would definitely be cool though, would sound good in an older car I reckon.

Also, dont be fooled about an SR20 being any sort of light weight, on account of the block being alloy.

Cant remember the exact figures, but it's a damn beefy block, heavier than a 3S anyway.

Yes.. but he doesn't want a turbo. Did you even read the thread? And I fail to see how these engines are "numbingly expensive"..

I don't think I need to go on? For an extra few hundred, you could have considerably more reliable power, more than enough to do skids and sideways at the track.. add up the cost of getting the earlier SR20DE, modifying it to that power level safely and I'm almost certain it would make plenty more sense to get the VVL engine in the first place, and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to adapt another dizzy setup onto it.

Didn't really want to go into this but ergh what the hell. There's a bit more to it than that mate. Sure the engine may be "cheap" but what gearbox will you use? FWD SR20's (which the SR20VE is) do not bolt up to any RWD SR20 gearboxes....that would be an expensive fix, "adapting another dizzy setup" wouldn't change anything......you would still have a distributor sitting where your firewall is - yes you can use a CAS setup from something else....but instead of running off the cam gear it would be at the back of the head which is another thing to sort out, VVL solenoid needs to be relocated, coolant inlet/outlet will be sitting where your firewall is as well, both manifolds will need to be changed etc etc etc - and you can forget about using any form of factory ecu on it too so there's another $1500+ - you'd be doing well to get change from $5k for a gain of 40hp over a standard sr20de - yep, bang for buck

There is a reason why there are no Silvias with SR20VE's in them in NZ. Think about it, if it was as easy as dropping it in and changing a coupla things everyone would have done it already? The engine's aren't exactly rare/hard to find ;) They are a good engine and great gain for not much outlay *IF YOU OWN A PRIMERA/PULSAR/OTHER FWD SR POWERED THING* - trying to make one rwd is a costly exercise and you'll still have the average honda leaving you for dust
