GT Starlet Cannot Hold Idle (Cuts Out)

Postby Mr GTZ » Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:05 pm

OK so this has started since I diagnosed the boost problem related to the car, which was solved through another thread. Which was related to the vacuum hoses being switched to their wrong places. I have doubled checked all the hoses and they are all in their correct places.

So my problem now is that the car idles and drives fine at cold start up. But as soon as say 15 - 20 or so mins go by or as the car warms up to normal operating temp, the idle begins to die down and eventually cut out. I can see this is whats happening because on my way to work, every set of lights I reach the idle dies slowly and eventually the car dies every time I stop. So anyone know what could be causing this?

Have a play with the idle adjustment screw, it's in a recessed hole directly above the throttle body, might still have a little cap on it.

Try turning that up, cold start idle should be ~1.5k. Common fault is the idle screw adjusting itself, get it to where it's correct and stick a bit of blutack in there, shouldn't be a problem again.

How much to you turn it up feels like its already turned up pretty tight. Apart from the Idle adjustment what else could be causing this?

right = do up. left = undo
the further out it is the higher the idle will be.

possibly idle up solenoid broken or unpluged on the drivers side end of the intake plenum.
