blacktop knock - replacement engine needed!

Postby Flannelman » Thu Mar 12, 2009 5:52 pm

ok, a mate was giving his ae111 a beating and its started knocking so he drove slowly home. when there he asked me what it was and by the sound of it, she has run a big end bearing (see no oil on the dipstick.)
anyway gave him the rundown on either ripping that one out and fixing it or putting in another engine. i have a silvertop that could go straight in BUT would it work?

I know that some things are different from silvertop to blacktop but is there any reason why it wont work? just after a cheap fix as its a tidy car

It'll be fine, just use the sensors etc from the blacktop on the silvertop.

Swap the silvertop block onto the blacktop head? Similar price with better end result.

That is what I would suggest as well.

And if you are up to swapping them in run the BT pistons aswell.

Then you will pretty much have a blacktop again, with stronger rods

id go with just sticking in the silvertop
for the hassle of swapping heads etc its not really worth it. and not really meeting the cheap fix idea

if you wanted to mix and match, stick the blacktop pistons in the silvertop tickle the exhaust ports and bin the rest of the blacktop. waste of time doing anything else unless your going to go aftermarket ecu

Blacktop > Silvertop any day of the week, its not exactly a massive hassle.

Thats almost as bad as trdchik wanting to put a bluetop into an ae111 cos its a cheaper option. :? All of the above IMO of course..

for a cheap fix in this situation, the easiest thing to do is just drop in the silvertop.....

the single biggest improvement from silvertop to blacktop is the ECU map
many of the alterations done to the blacktop are not gains, infact there are one or two backwards steps. like the blacktops more frequent death via run no 4 bearing.... and the over large ITBs
