Inner guards??

Postby cat007 » Sun Mar 15, 2009 6:15 pm

Hey all

Do you think inner guards (the plastic lining inside the guard) serve a performance purpose (i.e. air flow etc)? Or are they just to stop stones etc?

Cheers

I saw an RX7 race car, with the inner guards taken out.

The guards were very badly damaged. It looked like a little man with a hammer had been beating the insides of the guards. It was not good.

I've had half of one cut out for years, doesnt seem to make to much difference for everyday driving

but performance wise? Would they really guide airflow enough to make a difference?

Mm, i'd say not enough to matter no.

I didn't have any on my skyline, also my rx7 had them removed no damage so far

yeah, i had to take mine out due to having to roll the inner lips of the front guards so my wheels didnt rub. Might look at modifying some later on to attach differently so i can run them.

on mates cars, where they have removed the liners, we stuck 3-4mm rubber mat on the inside of the panels and never got the dents you normally see with running no liner, and there was plenty of gravel road driving involved.

my car doesnt have one on the drivers side, as not having it allows cold air to go straight into my cold air box.... the down side though, is that my airbox keeps getting packed with mud >_< ah well, just another thing to clean.

some cars have brake ducting built into the guard lining, but mostly not. alot of cars run loom through the guard though so you are exposing that to possible damage from flying stones etc.

and the dirt factor as already mentioned
