Running slicks

Postby cat007 » Mon Mar 16, 2009 10:19 am

Hey all

I was wondering - I've got some V8 touring car slicks that I'm going to use for track racing - but I'm told I cant use them at Meremere?

You need DOT rated tyres to run in a street class, so no.

To run slicks you need a roll cage and you'll no longer be able to run in a street class.

What about if your car, has a cage, and is road legal? And are there dot rated semi slicks? Just thinking for my car...

I don't know if they are dot rated - but they aren't a semi slick - they're a full slick....

Yeah they did - so yeah - they probably aren't DOT rated

I just find it funny that a $85 "budget tyre" is allowed on the track but a full slick from a V8 touring car isn't lol

DOT rated tyres have a tread of sorts. The Hoosier ones have two lines of "tread" right around them, which means they can therefore be DOT rated.
Not that you'd drive with them on the street though!

It's because you're in a street class and a $85 budget tyre is street legal.

So if I turned up not wanting to be in a street class and just wanting to have a race - would I be allowed to use them? Even though they probably wouldn't be very good for drag racing lol

There are a few you can get. You don't NEED a cage to run them. You only need a cage if you go faster than 11.0 sec.
Hoosier make some, M&H and M/T also.

Calwells have a catalogue of tyres they can get in and it states whether they are DOT rated or not.

They are really expensive, especially now with the way the dollar is.

No, you need a roll cage to run slicks.

I think you'll find that an $85 budget tyre would be quicker at the drags than a track slick anyway.

I tried track slicks on our old supra powered levin, and on our 1GGTE celica at ruapuna.
Even with a large burnout to warm them up they were still slower than the road tyres we had on other rims,
And the Kumho V700's I tried were a lot quicker again.

Track slicks are designed for a lot of sideways grip, probably more so than forward grip.
Nzv8's aren't that grunty anyway.

Yes I tried some slicks as well, along time ago. Not that great at all.

Just go buy some proper drag tyres!! the difference is huge to a normal tyre!!!

Toyo R888s have my vote, still pretty cheap these days about $280 a piece for semi slicks!

I used semi slicks at the drags once, straight line traction isn't much different to a decent "normal" road tire, the real difference is in cornering grip. Race slicks don't have the soft sidewall of a drag slick, which is what gives you the traction when launching. +1 vote for proper drag tire.

I knocked 1/2 a second off my 60foot time with my hoosier quicktimes without even trying, still more in it once I finetune the launch control and fix the rooted rear shocks
