W - series rwd to 4wd

Postby CelicaGT8 » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:46 pm

Heya all,

Im building a 1uz celica, but was thinking about makeing it 4wd... more difficult etc, but was wondering about the gearbox.

I currently have a w55
is it possible to get the ratios of the w55 but use like a hilux 4wd box or something... im not sure if its possible, iv played around with fwd boxes but not rwd boxes and not sure whats possible with these boxes.

Or

does anyone no of a seperate transfer case, so i could use the w55 then have a shaft to the transfer case and then on to the diffs...

Out of curiosity, where are you planning on fitting a front diff?

G55 huh, ill google the boxes you mentioned.

The 4wd luz's have the diff in the sump???
If i used a transfer case it would place the front diff close to the left hand side of the sump, so id probably have to make another sump.

But at this stage its really just an idea, if i figerd it all out and it seemed like it was going to work id try it.

go for a 185 series surf R151 type box, that'll give you the transfer box with the front drive on the LH side, should be able to be mated to a 1UZ front diff

The 1uz's are all auto arnt they?
Im only interested in a manual.

I have a W-series to 1uz bellhousing which wasnt cheap so i want to use it, it wouldnt fit the surf box would it?

And the ratios of the box would make it drive like a ute wouldnt it?
Im after speed 8)

the early type 4wd hilux boxes are W/G series which will mate up with your bell housing, the problem then lies in that the early boxes have the front driveshaft on the RH side, where as the later ones have them on the LH side.
The ratios are OK, 1st gear is generally pretty short in them which means you'll get moving in 1st then need to hook 2nd pretty early. The bottom line is you have to have a comprimise somewhere as you cant have your cake and eat it to which it sounds like you want.

you can put R154 internals into an R151/R150 box, but the bell housing wont fit.

Which probably means you could put W57/w58 internals into a W/G55 type hilux box
