heya, my mates got a 4wd gt corolla
its an early 90's model so i think its an ae104? (havent actuly seen it)
im pritty sure its a 4afe
so question is how hard would a 4age converstion be?
it would be strait forwards wouldint it? strait bolt in and probably new comp and loom?
would the drive train handle the power?
and would it need a cert? for the power increse, because its the same series engin and size ect?
also what would it cost? could you get a donor blactop livin for a grand or so?
ge and fe are are verry similar engines apart from the head and manifolds etc i know of some one who has a 90s starlet which is 4wd and
manual an i always think how much i would love to put a gt starlet motor in it
yeah i know the main diference is the head (altho internils are stronger in 4age)
so shuld be strait bolt in in terms of mounts and box.. but can the drivetrain handle it? and is the power increse enough to requier a cert?
also is it worth it? because iv never actuly herd of it been done b4, so whats the catchj?? (to be honist id never even herd of a 4wd corolla untill the other day )
There are more to cert rules in engine swaps than increase in power. Yes it probly would still pass a WOF, but wouldnt be legal as such.
The box in my AE95 was pretty weak in terms of syncros etc. Plus I wouldnt have thought the ratios exactly ideal for a high revving engine.
the only thing you may have an issue with is finding somewhere to bolt the support that goes from the top of the transfer box back to the block. everything else should be sweet.

My old flatmate managed to ruin 2 boxes in his old 4WD Carib, and I'm pretty sure it was just a 4AFE powered thing. I'd imagine a 4AGE would destroy them pretty often with spirited driving

i'm picking by ruin your probably actually meaning killed the synchros, cause i cant see how a 4afe has enough power or torque to actually BREAK an E series box, in which case he should have learnt how to change gear better.......

Bearings from memory actually, though I could be wrong. Though he did like to try doing roll backs and helis

The 20% rule is if you're modifying an engine that was the same as factory fitted. Once you go over 20% then you require a cert for the work done.
If you a substituting the engine with another one from the same family of engines etc etc then you don't need a cert. Unless it makes more power than the other. And there is no percentage on that, if it makes more power then it needs a cert.
So going by the book you can get up to 20% extra from your 4A-FE and not need a cert. But a standard 4A-GE in its place will require a cert
basically its worded so that anything other than the exact same engine, or a smaller version of that engine needs a cert
its debatable to a wof issuer that the 4age head is the same family... it is in toyota, its a 4a head. but its a different type of head that the 4afe a point of contention for some! anyway the power figure ruins it
in my mazda i replaced my standard 1500 carby engine with a 1600 injected engine. never ever had anyting said about a cert by the wof guys. if u get hit up just say thers a 4age 4wd model (and yes point out that thers a factory typo on the plate )
