Architectural Draughting

Is anyone an Architectural Draughtsperson in the Wellington area?

If so what is the work load and job vacancy like at the moment?

The reason I ask is, I am coming up to Wellington tomorrow for two weeks looking for a job as a Draughtsperson.

I was made redundant from my job in Dunedin and looking live and work in the Wellington area.

Does anyone know of company's/businesses that are looking for an Architectural Draughtsperson?
I have a large list of places to visit but just asking here if people know of any jobs.

Yea the market is tough. Our office ran low on work and had to cut back on staff. It went from 8 employees to 3.

I've been using AutoCAD and have Revit experience. So I guess I wouldn't be much use to them.

have you tried opus consultants? I used to work there, they take quite a few architects there. And they have offices all over the country so there might be something somewhere for u.

If you know how to use it, it is.

I don't know that much about it so I only use it for 3D modeling just to show the client what they might get when the building is finished.

I feel Revit isn't finished and from what other people in my office have told and shown me there are alot of bugs and the 2D draughting is usless.

whats wrong with teh 2d drafting? not enough detail? it becomes quiet quick and simple once you start using call outs etc to draw the details onto it just like and 2d cad system.

Hmm I would definately be trying to upskill with revit (esp if you have a 'copy' at home)

Its they way all the large architecture firms up here are going. Jasmax doesnt use autocad at all anymore. You will find it filters down more and more to smaller firms too, is already happening here.

Revit Architecture is pretty sweet from what I have heard from our guys, in my section we are just getting more into Revit MEP, think its in its third release, 2009 was a huge leap ahead from 2008.

Our office used Revit for jobs for the Otago uni.

Learning more about Revit would be a big advantage. Also ArchiCAD seems to be used alot and I have no experience with that.

I've been a Draughtsperson for 3 years now.

Finding a job at the moment doing this seems to be very hard. So I've applied for other jobs.
But I am putting my CV and Portfolio out to as many Architectural places as I can.

I work for Beca, not sure if our wellington office has an architecture section, I assume it would though, I would recommend dropping a CV off to them. Could see what I can do to help, but as I am in Building Services and only been here 18months I dont pull much weight

Wellington seems to be all engineering and they aren't taking anymore 'graduates' till 28th of April.

Finding a decent job with limited experience is not so easy. But you got to start somewhere.

yeah Beca is a bit of a big machine so if your timing for applying/needing a job is out you are out of luck unless you know someone high up.

From what I have heard Chch is struggling for big projects and wellington is starting to dry up a bit. It would be good to be around for when it kicks off again but who knows when that is.

Still a bit of work floating around in Auckland for buildings, so you may want to have a think about moving well north. Otherwise if you havent thought of it yet, the aussie market hasnt really felt the 'recession' yet, though that may happen sooner or later, but could be worth a look over there. I have just got back from a holiday in Melbourne, awesome city to be in. I would probably go there so tied into staying in Auckland at the moment.

I did end up finding a great job working for Homecreators Homes for almost 2 years but work has dried up and I have been made redundant again.

So I am looking for another job doing CAD drawing. Anything to do with building or steel work. Residential or commercial.

I have applied for a few jobs so far and looked at Opus but there isn't anything there.

If anyone has any contacts or know of any jobs that would possibly be good to look at that would be great.

I think you've just described every 3d cad package ever.. working daily with solidworks and having used pro/engineer you will discover:

1) They all crash... usually just as you make the last adjustment of a 2 hour productive run in which you were so busy making sh#t awesome that you forgot to save.

2) If you do the exact same set of operations 10 times you'll end up with 6 different results.

3) your $$$ per year support contract is usually less useful than 20mins on google.

Or am I just being cynical again?
