20V VVT Pully testing

Postby neo » Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:28 pm

Hey all,

Has anyone found a way to test VVT Pulleys when the engine isnt going to find out how worn out it is / how bad the ticking will be when it goes back on.

I'm doing a cam-belt and I have two to choose from, so seeing if there is a way I can pick the least worn one :)

hmmm i'll have to see if i can dig them up again

neil, if you have one you know is good you maybe able to compare free movement...
does anyone have one they know is stuffed to see if there a lot of slop in them when knackered?
from memory there maybe evidence of oil leaking from them as well

I've got a well-poked one (car sounded like a diesel!) at home if you want me to measure play etc, for comparisons' sake.

that image has come off another forum, I have opened one up (used a grinder+cutting disc) but never took pics, they only run on engine oil and have the spring....

I pulled one apart using a press.

its 2 helical gears one inner one outer, both going in different directions.

The problems either going to be the spring getting weak or the gears wearing out.

Whatever you do...
DON'T take any VVTi pulley apart if you want to use it again!
They are often setup in the factory with a specific preload, and won't work correctly if you stuff with them.
The factory manuals specifically state "do not disassemble"

I have been given a couple of 3sge altezza ones already taken to bits so I can post pics if anyone wants.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Hi guys, my car is making the same noises, plus leaking a bit of oil, so am assuming it could be the VVT pully, will check tonight by appling the 12v to the plug that was mentioned.

If it is broken, what do i do about fixing it? buy a intake cam for 20v?
