st205 openions/feedback owners/ ex-owners

Postby dnalunchie » Sun Apr 12, 2009 2:31 pm

Hey guys Im thinking seriously of selling my type R and replacing with an st 205 or a tourer/chaser V turbo (probly an auto)

Im just wanting a little info on both. (Yes ive used the search function with im looking for some more specifics)

First how quick in terms of 0-100 and 400m times are each in factory spec?

How much power have people made with the basic exhaust intake and boost increases and are there any issues to be concerned about maintainence wise?

Would I be right in saying that both are fairly reliable cars?

Also once I sell the type R I should have around 10k to play with, im guessing this should be enough to get me sumthing VERY mint in an st205 and still decent for an auto chaser?

Any owners with openions on either of these cars or ex owners etc would be great to hear from you.

Get the 205, and you will love her forever. I wish i never sold mine, and the overall handling of them is amazing. Short of my civic, tis the best car ive owned. (Out of an EG civic, a legnum, a curren, a 205, another civic, an ae101 levin, and an ae92 levin)
1996 Curren - On Tardme
1992.5 EG Civic - 101kw@wheels. WTB 4x100 6.5in wide rims.

Both the Chaser and the GT4 are more cruiser type cars than the type-r.

Factory figures for an ST205 1/4 mile is 14.2 seconds, although that's a bit optimistic on Toyota's part. They're probably closer to a high 14/low 15, especially given their age now.

0-100 quoted at 5.9s, although again maybe a bit overstated.

Pleasure to meet you easter bunny :)

Stock GT4 will do high 13's depending on your mechanical sympathy. It's been proven plenty of times.

Decide what you want out of the car before you choose one. An st205 and a jzx100 are 2 very very different cars. I'd personally go with the jzx as they're a little easier to make power out of and are most reliable as the km's start to climb (imo)

That and you've got a better chance of finding a good unmolested jzx100 than you are to find the same in celica flavour.

Yeah - 14.2 second 1/4 mile in 97mph, but it takes 15.4 seconds to reach 100mph? So it takes 1.2 seconds to go from 97mph to 100mph?

yeah - maybe not all stats on the internet are real? lol

Hehe :D

Ok, hands up who has a completely STOCK gt4 that has run 13s. No exhaust, no filter, no slicks, no nothing?

Exhaust and filter do nothing on them (my mate had ST205 with exhaust and poddie and we compared and it was exactly same performance).
Mine is completely stock, I also have ST165 that I have done low 13s on it with CT20b running similar boost to a stock ST205 and stock ST165 motor.
The acceleration is comparable to my ST205, I haven't taken it to meremere (don't really plan as I don't want to break it). But I have raced my ST165 and ST205 vs my mates 250cc Honda race bike (I don't remember what exact name, only thing I know it has 47hp and "repsol" all over it) with exactly same result (once it is in 3rd gear bike is far behind).

im with him on the depends what you want from a car bit. but for me, id go for the 205
better handling, awesome point to point car and a lot faster in the real world than a lot of ppl give them credit for.
and lets be honest, 1/4 mile times dont mean shit really.

but if you wanted a bigger interior and a cruiser type car, then the jzx would the go. and as mentioned easy to up the power on, but then you also have to spend $$ on the suspension etc.

relaibility wise, i woudl say pretty even and as always depends on service history. 205s super strut is $$$ to replace

so are you a sunday country road blaster? or a friday night lapper?

I think ST205's are great cars and value for money they are very hard to beat. Finding one in good condition without huge k's will be the hardest part though. Look on trademe at the moment, I wouldn't buy any of them.

Regarding what they run the 1/4 in stock who cares. Mark Higgs (skin) ran a 13.3 sec 1/4 in his with a gutted cat, and an aftermarket rear section with about 16/17psi on stock turbo/ecu/ic
With a full exhaust inc downpipe, power fc and about 17-18psi you should be able to run high 12's pretty easily compared with Marks result.

The super strut links are the only known weakness as far as I know.

From memory mine did around mid 13's at Meremere. That was with the stuff listed here apart from the Autronic:

http://gtfour.supras.org.nz/my%20modifications%20st205.htm

That was also blowing black smoke from overfueling and issues with traction (too much causing it to bog if not quite right). I wasn't beating the car up too much.

An improved exhaust and a boost controller will allow a lot more power very easily.

That said it depends what you want the car for. Mine is not a city car, it is not a car for commuting in Auckland traffic. The gearing is crap round town (does 100 in second but hates 4th below 70) but excels on the open road.

The chaser would be a better car for comfort (even stock ST205 is quite firm) but wouldn't have the sporty edge.
