Bloody Paintwork

Postby celica_xr9145 » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:26 pm

Well, after washing my car earlier, i looked on the floor and there was red flakes of paint coming off the door.
So what can i do to prevent it from getting worse?

Also, how much would i be looking at for a respray and all the scratches and dents removed?
Just the original toyota super red so it looks in showroom condition
The dents are no bigger and a $1 coin.

To respray the entire car and have a showroom finish? Definately, would easily be $5k, maybe more. Alot of time goes into a good paintjob

My red SW20 is losing its clear coat on the drivers door just above the door handle.
Probably from the wear its had from peoples hands opening the door. And on the wing mirrors.

I haven't done anything to stop it but I try to be gentle with the area and polish it to keep the red paint from oxidizing too much.

About 2 weeks ago i did give it a wax but i didnt spend too much time on the door though, mainly the bonnet and the back end.

If it would cost 5k, im not going to bother. Like you said, the paint work would be worth more than the car :?

If i did, i think i would get the cheapest option

It wont be worth it $$$ wise as it will be worth bugger all more with fresh paint that it is now.

My car needs a paint, but it would be money down the drain as people won't give you car value + painting cost.

I'd just get the door done, not worry too much about the small dents, and touch up stone chips etc. Good value for money. A repaint is money down the drain really.

Just my 2 c though.

Good idea, just worried about it looking patchy but a good car painter might be able to get good match

Was reading on the internet and someone had flaking paint and someone replied that it is sometimes due to someone respraying the car and not doing the prep work properly so the paint doesnt stick.

That made me think because i think some parts of the car like the door has been resprayed because the front wing and the door is in immaculate condition (apart from the flaking paint) compared to the rest of the paint looks much deeper. Could have been a bodged paint job by someone who doesnt know what there doing :?

Who knows, but yeah it would look worse to get only a few pannels done in factory colour due to red fade.

Its impossible to perfectly match a panel to 2-3 others. Each other panel will be slightly different to the next so yeah...

I have a few different shades, its what you get if you can't afford to respray the whole car each time ya car gets damaged for whatever reason.

If it's the clearcoat coming off probably sun + age related,

But if it's red flakes coming off, then yes could be a bad preped job done before,
and to get it redone properly it will need that layer of paint removed and prepped properly, so more $$$.

Got a quote a couple of days ago to get my Evo resprayed in a similar colour and that was around 4 grand so I would imagine being a slightly smaller car you would be looking at that price range.

had a similar problem with my old curren (was red funnily enough). got quotes for about $3k for a full respray.

your probably better off trying to do it yourself once it gets really bad, google "50 dollar paint job", if i remember correctly it was an american fella who painted his charger? looks better then patchy flakes :D

*edit* here it is

Thanks for all the replies, i think i'll forget about the respray or maybe one day like scott-ish said, try myself but the only experience ive had is spraying interior parts and wipers red, lol.

I was looking on trade me and trying to find a red door and bumper isnt easy.

Took another look at it earler on and noticed the stone chips on the same door are now getting bigger and peeling off 8O

At least the coat under the red paint is a pinky red, not a bright colour, lol.

Its a bit strange how it happens all at once :?
