ST215 Caldina Plenum Wire (BEAMS 3S)

Postby xsspeed » Mon Apr 13, 2009 12:37 pm

Can anyone shed any light on this wiring?

Was cleaning the car and noticed it had corroded and broken off, I may have just knocked it today so dont know how long its been this way.

Wire runs along the engine strut and connects to a terminal near the battery.

Not sure if I should just try to pull the wire through some more and reattach or rewire it?

This is my thinking also, but assumption is the mother of all f*** ups so just wanted to check.

I will fix it anyway, but if I dont need to do it today, I'll put it off a week

EDIT: Should add that this is a 1997 Caldina GT BEAMS 3SGE ST215G

Roman I am waiting for your info

It does look like an earth, but standard earths arent usually cable tied to the strut brace, which would make me assume that someones added it in after? Can you see where the cable leads to?

OK here is the rest of the wiring,

It goes from the plenum, across the strut, around airbox where it connects to this multi terminal on the -ve.

The other cabes go around and connect to radiator, and alternator.

Close up of multi terminal, also grounds to body of car

The cables say "power cable 105 deg, 0.12 7.4mm^2"

I am thinking its some kind of grounding kit, presumably not factory

Just had a closer look, the cable that runs along the strut is well corroded, and the sheath has hardened so obviously has liked the heat coming of the top of the motor.

Yep, looks to be a grounding kit. Wont be factory. Id probably be inclined to connect it back up for asthetic reasons, but i really doubt you'd notice a difference unless one of your factory grounds were stuffed!

I say take it off. Also check for fuel magnets, take them off as well, and strips of copper around intake, in fact check for intake "tornado" as well while you there.

It is common for Japanese to put grounding kits just because. It is almost religious to them. Grounding kits are good for cars with rotten wires (like 30yo).

This is what I suspected as I have seen a few other imports that my mates have with these, just didnt want to predetermine anyones thinking

As for getting rid of it, I will probably just do the opposite and make sure it is wired correctly and check the condition of the wires where they have been exposed to heat. For this one I will either reattach or if wire is too far gone I will probably rewire it.

Not like grounding these engine ancilliaries is a bad thing.

There is def nothing non factory in the intake, but might actually check for those fuel magnets lol

Yep +1 to aftermarket grounding kit.

The plenum is isolated from the engine block by rubber spacers at the base of the intake runners, the grounds for injectors etc usually attach to the base part before the rubber, not on the plenum itself.

So I dont think there's any actual point in having an earth running to that area. Obviously there wasnt enough slack in the wiring, as the engine moving relative to the strut brace caused it to break. So it'll most likely break again if you fix it again, to how it was.

Wouldnt be fussed about fixing it, just take it off if anything.
