Suspension movement - is this normal?

Postby cat007 » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:12 am

Hi all

I’m confused about my rear suspension. If I lean on the back of the car, it goes down ¼ inch, and then it’s very hard. When I lift off though, the car takes 2-3 seconds to rise back up that ¼ inch.

What’s up with that? It the shocks were buggered, wouldn’t it just rise up straight away?

Thats what shocks do.....
Take a shock off and compress it with the power of your pitiful human arms. It will go pffffffff to short length then slowly go back to full length.
But maybe I'm wrong cause I'm just the bored guy stuck at home with a broken leg.

Lol, I'm just the bored guy at work

Pretty sure that is normal.

The shock is just acting as a damper that in this case is working against the spring extending back to normal length.

If anything is wrong from what you have said, either your shocks are over damping, or your springs aren't providing enough force.

Having said that I don't know if 2-3 sec is a long time to return to normal or not.

I've just not ever seen it before. I might take my shocks out next weekend and see what they act/feel like out of the car.
Maybe I'll take the car to "the shock shop" or similar and get a test done?

I am only comparing time to say what it would take one of my corollas to come back up to normal. And they spring back up almost straight away, but then different suspension set ups etc

Whats your car? Supra right? I am sure one of the other guys with supras will spot the post and let you know what theirs are like. As I have no idea whats normal or not.

Has it always done this or just something you noticed?

Yeah supra. It's something I've only just noticed - but in saying that, I've not tried it before.....

Just seems odd that's all....
