Are bump stops necessary?

Postby Sh0ckwave » Thu Apr 16, 2009 5:20 pm

Bit of a noob question

I'm changing the struts on my ae101.

The new ones I got from Toyota didn't come with any bump stops or the rubber spring seat things, and the old ones are worn out/gone. Do I need to go buy some or are they not needed?

I'm using low springs if that makes an difference.

They are not just there for show, they limit suspension travel, to stop you from bottoming out the suspension.

Just think what happens when a couple hundred kg's worth of force hits the bottom of your shock body because you went over a bump and you didn't install a $10 piece of bump stop. :(
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

They are part of the springing system of the shocks, and are not just there to stop the shocks from bottoming out. In other words you need to get new ones, or your shocks will not function as designed.

I'll get some bump stops.

But what about the rubber bits that the springs sit on?

If I'm thinking of the right bit, its just to reduce noise, should be sweet without it.
