That is the most complicated natural selection machine i've seen yet

Axle stands aren't THAT expensive... I mean the money you save by not buying them is no use to you if that strap breaks. :?

i've ripped apart ratchet straps using them similar to the pic shown above with a block and tackle. They were $25 dollar ones, and yours look similar in size to mine. I wouldn't even dare go under neath that thing.

wouldnt you be better to have it from the beam in the background?
Chains around it without the use of the straps.
Guess there's no room over there huh?

you always think that horrific heavy-thing-falling-on-you accident isn't going to happen, and then the mr2 falls of the jack stands and snaps your wrist through both bones and pins your arm underneath, leaves you unable to write legibly for your first semester of university and leaves you with limited mobility in your wrist...

I am now scared shitless of getting under anything unless I know it's really well secured and can't fall

What words of wisdom would you like carved into your tombstone?

Preferably not something about hoists please.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

OMFG!

Those small ratchet straps are sooo weak. I wouldn't use ratchet straps unless they were those HUGE ones with the 2" wide straps.

I think I'd trust it if I were using seatbelts rather than the straps. Seatbelts can be used as tow rope! Strong as! I hang the chain hoist off a roof beam using seatbelts and I've had no problems.

Well............ going by some Rock Climbing basic's... Id say its 50/50 on it being safe.

The angle of the chain is wrong. The force it pushing outwards onto the garage beams, that is also multiplied by the angle.

*Can't get the link to show up properly.. so you will have to copy paste*
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor_(climbing)

Here check out that link...

* At a V-angle of 30 degrees, each of the two anchors bear a force of about 52% of the original load.
* At 45 degrees, each anchor bears about 54% of the load.
* At 60 degrees, each anchor bears about 58% of the load.
* At 90 degrees, each anchor bears about 71% of the load.
* At 120 degrees, each anchor bears a force equivalent to 100% of the original load. An angle this large should never be used.

There is a picture on the link with the V angle explained. By the looks of it you are getting close to 100 degree angle... so your roof is holding nearly another 90+% weight of your car.

Use the chain on the right to lower the hoist a lil.

Also you can re-tie the ratches with this knot

http://www.animatedknots.com/waterknot/ ... dknots.com

Edit:... Actually Im gonna go out on a limb here and say its UNSAFE. Sure its holding the load up etc etc but you will be in the danger zone..

http://www.secureaload.co.nz/ratchet_tiedowns.html

Those tiedowns on top got a "lashing" limit of 750kgs (I think the lashing and load limit's will be different)

So how much would your car weigh?... then times it by 1.9... 500kgs maybe?... 950kg is the weight on those ratchet's and garage beams.

screw the car, i reckon those wood beams are gonna snap sideways and the roof will come down. they are designed for vertical load, not horizontal. Your putting horizontal load on them...

The corrogated iron roof will do a pretty good job of keeping them apart. The whole system is dodgy as though, it would be much better off hanging the block and tackle from the large beam in the background (using its chain), and taking 2 points from the chassis to the hook of the block and tackle, keeping the angle between those points and the hook at or below 90°

Rerig it with some better equipment like some chains or a engine crane.
