Gran Turismo vs Real life....apparently they can be the same

Check out this guy- He won the GT Academy (basically, the winner of a series of Gran Turismo races) which provided him with a racing license and chance to drive a 350Z at the 24 hr Dubai race...after his impressive performance there he is now going to be driving in the European GT4 championship.

The only difference between gaming and real life is a "restart" function... oh and the pain when you hit a wall at 200k+ 8O

That would have been a sweet deal "i knew all those 1000's of hours playing gt3/gt4/gt5pl would pay off" :lol:

anyone watch that top gear episode where clarkson went round Laguna Seca on the playstation then tried to do the same in real life in the NSX? He had a hell of a time and IIRC

The difference is, Jeremy isn't a gamer, and doesn't play for days (and he was only playing GT1 :lol: ). vs. a gamer that's probably played the track hundreds, if not thousands of times.

I would also think being a gamer would cause you to learn more from the game than someone that's not.

I thought it was gt3 (graphics were kinda ok). And the time he managed on grand turismo was actually pretty good

and fair enough - it would scare the crap outa me lol

Although coming over the hill at puke doing a 4 wheel drift scares me so maybe its not that bad.... lol

No it was GT4. It was only a few seasons ago.

On a related note, in the episode where he's driving the diesel jaguar or whatever it was around the 'ring, they had interviewed some guy who was there who had played 4000^37 hours of the 'ring on some form of xbox game of it, and he said it's rather different in that you don't anticipate the bumps/dips/curves etc when you compare it to the real thing.

I think GT4 is too forgiving. too much traction control and anti spin out etc etc i have played more realistic games. I rechon that guy just has had a talent for driving all along.

Scary Corkscrew footage, imagine being on a bike and coming wide across the top and ending up the gravel, and still keeping the throttle on.

thing is i found the fastest way through the corkscrew on GT was to hit the crest at 300km/hr and let gravity do the rest :D

LFS is a pretty realistic simulator.

The main problem I have with these sorts of games, even if you've got a setup like a G25 and seat etc is these two things:

1. The lack of acting forces on the body.
You use what you feel to judge how hard you're braking, how close to locking up, how much traction you've got acellerating out of corners etc etc. These games lack that, which to me is a huge factor.
I've seen a hydraulic rig, which emulates G forces by exaggerating how far forward it leans under braking, how far back it leans under acceleration etc. That would help, but be pretty expensive.

2. The lack of depth perception.
Even though its '3D', its still presented in a 2D format, a monitor.
This makes it hard to judge how far off a corner is, the angle of a corner and even the width of the track.
It can be good for training the mind to use markers on the side of the track to judge a corner though. Eg, whether or not is an offical marker (100m sign etc) or something you're using, you can work out after a few laps where you can start braking, and how hard you need to brake etc.
An ideal setup would be like headset with 2 micro screens in it, 1 for each eye. Thats how you can make it true 3D so you have depth perception.
To go a step further, some sort of motion sensor setup would be ideal, so that when you move your head, it moves in the game as well, for looking left or right etc.

Those solutions combined would probably be the closest you could get to actual racing in a virtual world. And it would be highly expensive to do.

One other thing I just thought of is pedal feedback. You usually get some feedback from the brake pedal when braking, and even the clutch pedal when letting it out.
The G25 doesn't give you any sort of feedback there. Maybe some more expensive way high end ones do, I'm not sure.

Thats my take on it anyway.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
