Fuel leak in 4agze engine bay, cause ?

Postby beeker » Sun May 03, 2009 2:52 pm

Hi guys,

Have a 4agze in my Ae86. Have just removed the after market Walbro fuel pump to check it for debris, and after refitting it, the engine bay is now leaking fuel, as per the pic. Apears to be coming out of where the main fuel feed (after the fuel filter) when it hits the the fuel rail (my layman language).

Any ideas why this would happen ? Air blockage ?

PS Car seems to run fine, I drove around the block prior to noticing it. Its quite a volume of petrol which is leaking.

It maybe just a coincidence that its leaking, perhaps its been leaking for a while and you didnt notice?

Is it leaking out of the banjo fitting? is there any leaks from the return line/regulator? cold start injector? split hose?

Its quite a volume leaking out, and i would have noticed it prior.

Seems to be leaking out of the seal where the fuel feed goes in the rail.

I thought it too much of a co-incidence of it occuring right after refitting the fuel pump. What else would cause this ? blocked return line ? Air blockage ?

If it is a banjo fitting or the like they have two copper washers on either side of the fitting, they can work harden, have you tried tightning it up? if you do end up taking it off its best to replace the washers or you can anneal them.

I dout an air leak could cause that, It could be a blocked return line or faulty regulator stopping or slowing down the fuel from returning back to the tank causing the rail pressure to increase and it found the weakest link? again I dout it.

Let it cool down for 3 hours, then restarted the testing. Problem is, it wont leak now. Idled it for 15 minutes, no leaks, restarted 3x, no leaks, 2 minute drive, no leaks, 10 minute drive, no leaks.

In some ways this is good, but in some ways i may have a lurking intermittent problem ? Will test more during the week.

Injector oring
have you had the rail off?

sometimes some fuel can eat and damage the orings around the injectors and they can leak

or on the flip side

again if you have had the copper washers off and havnt replaced them they can also cause mayhem

or
or
or

the bolts on the injector rail are loose

could be anything

Out of interest - where do you get replacement copper washers? Any parts place? Putting my Sards in so might as well get new washers and o-rings.
