mr2 + towbar?

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Mon May 04, 2009 11:33 pm

Hi all, looking at buying a sw20 mr2 in the next month or so. It will be turbo and manual.

Just want to know if anyone here has one that has a towbar fitted? I wont be towing a car trailer, but most importantly will need to tow a jetski (350 odd kgs).

Would this be ok?

Thanks in advance :)

Thing is that the MR2 wasn't made with towing in mind, so it doesn't have any points included for bolting one straight on.

I have seen one on TradeMe that had one, but that would have been custom made.

I don't see that you'd have a problem towing in it. A 3SGTE will have enough torque.
Does your trailer have lights etc? You'd have to wire in a plug which could be a bother.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Wired up a plug on my starlet (as its such a towing machine) didn't take much effort just had to splice into the tail lights and it was sorted.

Yea wiring isnt a problem. Im a electrician + have plenty experience with engine/loom conversions and the sort.

Dont mind getting a custom one made if it comes to that. Just need to know if there will be any adverse affects.

Yeah should be pretty easy, use scotch clips, much as I hate them.

Ive seen them on AW11 and the bolt point was either in the boltholes holding the bumper on (same as exhaust mount holes IIRC) or the swaybar boltholes...

I would imagine same principle could apply to a sw20?

Poosibly, but I doubt thats what Toyota had in mind when they built it! Haha

be mindful of the effects of adding more weight to the rear of a car that's already rear biased as far as weight distribution goes...Probably will need to exercise more care than is normal when towing. Otherwise I don't see why it won't work
