Bucket depressing/Shim removal tool 4age 16v

Postby crispy'86 » Thu May 07, 2009 11:25 pm

So who's tried this method with the cams still bolted to the head, measuring the valve clearance and changed the shims with everything in place? I saw some home made version of a tool you could use in a haynes workshop manual but can't find it for the life of me. Anybody got any quick and easy methods of swapping them?
i read in a toyota workshop manual to use SST 09248-70010 but saying nobody would have one has anybody tried to make their own?

ive allways just pulled the cams. not that much more work.
how i do it = measure valve clearances (all 16) with feeler gauges, note down clearances. pull cams, measure shim, work out new shim thickness. install closest from jar of spare shims, repeat for all. reinstall cams. recheck clearances to confirm

I have the SST which works well but have also done it with a couple of screwdrivers too. If you get a large flathead screwdriver and push the valve open a little by putting it in the small 'cutout' while using a smaller screwdriver to flick the shim out.

Yeah i saw the way to make the SST in the manual how to do it. Will maybe try and make one to make it easier to push the bucket down. Got the magnet, nice strong one.
I'd find it easier to remove shims and swap them. Checked the valve clearances so will interchange them with others,

I neglected to mention i've got aftermarket cams and stronger valve springs. All good though, i just unbolted the cams and did it that way. Far lessd hassle than trying to press the bucket and still not get the shim out!!
