$4000 to spend.. but what to buy?

Hey guys, i have a bit of a delima, ill be selling my 91 Levin ae101 silver top with s/s suspension.

I was initially looking at a soarer or a celsior, the v8 versions.

But as i'm a student, i don't think this is a good idea.

As it would cost between 4 - 8k for a good example, and they look like crap on standard wheels, so there is another 3 grand.

So really i cant afford that for the time being.

ATM I'm looking at a turbo mr2. I'm wanting some thing fast.

My best mate has an aw11 has mild cams, extensive head work forged pistons, silvertop rods etc etc... fortunately this is only just quicker then my completely stock ae101, and my car weighs about 500kg more then his :)

my other mate has got a kp61, he will be putting a dual carbed 16v in it.

IMO he should go 20v and rock the quad throttle bodies, and if he wants the huge intake noise modify the quads.

obviously at performance decrease, but each to there own...

But am obviously wanting some thing quicker then there's.

Has to be Toyota, could be budged, but definitely not for pos vtec car, if i wanted to look like a wanker, id dress up like half the white kids that think there black.. its alot cheaper that way to :)

I am a full time student, part time macas worker, so money is definitely not falling of trees..

Wow, well if any body reads this, sorry for the novel.

If any one has more questions feel free to ask.

Oh, obviously insurance wont be the cheapest as I'm 17, but 18 soon and do have my full licence.

GT4, i would love, but i hate st185's and st205's are far too expensive.

I was supposed to be swapping my ae100 with a 5afe and my 42" tv for a black st205 GT4. My mechanic said it was one of the nicest examples he had seen. Then my faviourte mother said no, becuase the car was in her name and said that aparently my room wasnt tidy and she was taking my car off me, joys of been 15 with my restricted...

Any way, im almost 18, so she dosent give a crap now.

Now i sound like a stupid teenager :D

A student with low $$$. Should have been realistic and kept the 101 till you got a job after study.

The above list of 3 items is true, and will show you should have kept it ;)

I'm a student with a non turbo MR2, and I feel the friggen pinch :P

Na, that's the fat arse of his other MR2 that Petes touching...

Instead of something fast buy something cheap and RWD and go sideways instead. Old Coronas are still a decent price.

I would be very interested in some pictures :) I see your in wellington, i am too, is it a friends car?

Only thing i am a little worried on is fuel consumption, i relaise either way i go ( v8 or 2l turbo) its not going to be good, but atleast i can make up for it in the mr2 with the weight which is no were near as bad as the soarer.

On another note, im selling the 101 to my girlfriend, so its still there if i need it, just gives me an excuse to buy another car :)

I am a corners man, drifting or circut racing. the mr2 would do well as a casual track car untill i can afford lots of tires and a better suspension setup.

gas useage in a turbo would depend how you drive it.....
i suspect a 1UZ could be a bit better on the gas

I think you'll find a 2.0l turbo will be better on gas than a 4.0l V8.

Depends on usage though. Comparison:

1998 Toyota Caldian GT-T (2.0l Turbo, 4WD, 1500kg???) vs 1998 BMW 540i (4.4l NA, RWD, 1750kg)

Round town (KM/L):
8.5-11.0 vs 5.5-7.5

Open Road (KM/L)
8.5-11.0 vs 9.0-10.0

Now granted the BMW is heavier, but it's thirsty ALL the time. Where a turbo can be economical. But a V8 has power all the way through, where a turbo you have lag.

Hence I went for the 4.4l V8 but my god is it expensive. So worth it though.

Well its done 160kz

Black, got 17's on it, $1500 stereo, momo steering wheel. will have vvt pully seals done, cambelt done and complele oil change etc pretty much asap.

and further on down the track it will get a new head/block.

It has s/s suspension, passed a re-vin about 5 months ago, also has a sunroof which i beleive is quite rare for levins.

So, imo, its not really a rip off... plus her parents are paying for it..

+1 for the 540i.

Mate of mine has one, we took it from Auckland to Tauranga did the trip at around mid-night, i cant remember the time we did it in but it was $&#$% quick - average speed came out to be 140ish...not clever but $&#$% fun :D
