4WS Help Needed For Celica ST183

Postby celica_xr9145 » Mon May 11, 2009 4:57 pm

Anyone here worked on a 4ws system before?

The 4ws on my celica st183 has gone wrong, days before my driving test

Basically after 45km the 4ws light comes on and the wheels stick in the same direction whilst there supposed to stick in the opposite direction.

More about it here

Before 45km the wheels are supposed to go in the opposite directions (For parking and manuvering).

After 45km, the wheels are supposed to go in the same direction (gets rid of oversteer), now it is stuck in this mode.

The 4ws has always came on since the first day i bought it, its only now you can really notice it.

Also, the 2ws reverse doesnt work (i dont think).

All the 4ws light come on the dash telling me its on but doesnt work.

Do you see what i mean, its quite complicated.

What sort of garage shall i take it to, toyota or a local?

Im sure toyota will charge a fortune.

Here is some pics:

I have worked on quite a few.

It is a simple system to repair when you have the info,

unfortunatly it's at work and I am at home,

but from memory,

Check the fault codes first?
and post up the reply.

But my guess from your symptoms and my experience is that the main motor is worn out and it is working only on the reverse motor.

Dont know if you can buy brushes for them but I made some for the last one I did.

If that was the case, how much would it cost and how long do you think it takes?

Sound expensive, i was hoping for a cheap fix, lol.

Also, i have an idea of how to check the fault codes, is it the case of using a jumper wire to bridge connections and then turn ignition on and count the flashes?

Cost will depend on where you take it.
From memory, say 2 to 2/12 hours work drive in drive out,
as long as you know that's the fault, and know which parts is which,
and how to get them apart.

And you'd need brushes to make the brushes out of.

Yes, same as engine codes but with Tc and E1.

Code should be from memory 23 or 32. Basically it's usually caused by a failed position sensor.

Best bet is to replace with a second hand unit. Though limited lifecycle on these too, but if it fails you've got the other one that can allow you to build a whole new one.
Brute force and ignorance always prevails.

Failure comes from too little brute force, or too little ignorance.

Any ideas?

I thought it was 11 (ECU) and 41 (Speed Sensor) but not sure.

Well, got it back from the mechanic today and found out that the owner before me had replaced the cv with one from a celica 2ws, not 4ws.

The difference is that the 4ws cv has a ring that measures the speed of the wheel and goes up through a sensor and into the ecu.

A 2ws has no ring on it the the sensor wasnt responding to the sensor and went into default mode.

So now, the garage has to track down this cv for a 4ws and currently cant find nothing, looks to be really hard to find.

I just hope he can find one before the 22nd because thats when my driving test is 8)
