What should I ask the reconditioners to do?

Postby Vertigo » Sat May 16, 2009 2:49 pm

Ive got a new block now, looks good enough to send away for prep before i rebuild. I want to make sure both the head and block will last. So what should I get them to do for me? And can someone recommend a place in Auckland to do so?

Really depends what you plan on doing with it too. If its just a standard rebuild, then a hone will suffice for the bores, and pressure test the head.

well, to get this thread started, i was thinking a hone and a skim, minimum. is a hardness test and crack test necessary? anything else? also want the block clean enough to eat off, i want to repaint it. acid bath, steam blast?

The first thing you need to do is get them to measure it twice ;)

Until it get's measured properly then it's impossible to tell what's needed.

When most people on forums talk about a hone, what they're really meaning is putting a glaze breaker down the bores and roughing them up a bit. Proper power honing is used to finish bores to size and to some extent to make them round, and can take .001-.002" off the bores. In the case of a secondhand block this will probably result in too much piston clearance.

Yep get the bores and crank measured first. That will tell you what actually you NEED to do. No one here can tell you what your engine needs without knowing the ovality/taper of your bores and wear on the crankshaft journals.

I think a hardness check on the head is a must - if it's too soft it's a throw away I believe. Only 10mins and maybe $10. Flatness too to see if it needs a skim.

Since its bare I would get them to fit a full new engine gasket kit too.

Perhaps O'Ring the head/block as a safety measure?

Pretty unnecessary unless he's planning on running 30+ psi and nitrous or something similar.

Only really necessary if you're running a copper head gasket. Which, IMO, cause more problems than they solve.

Multilayer Steel gaskets have largely done away with the need for o-rings.
