I guess we'll all have to buy radar detector detector detector detectors then ;)

AFAIK NZ has no specific legislation governing the use of Jammers.

That being the case Laser Jammers are legal as they only emit IR light, Radar Jammers are illegal because the emit RF signals for which you need a licence.

Ah might have confused the two then

I'd be surprised if they are legal as you are obstructing the police from doing their job. The type of tech used to do the blocking aside.

I believe the police tried to the use the obstruction argument for radar detectors years ago, got thrown out of court as I suspect would any attempt to prosecute for having a laser jammer under the same pretense. To effectively prosecute there would need to be a specific law against their use

Technically radar jammers aren't illegal, just their use without the appropriate permit is, and I seriously doubt you'd have any chance of getting a permit to operate on those frequency ranges

I dunno, detectors are passive by nature whereas the jammers interefere with their gear. Would be an interesting case anyway, but I imagine you'd need to find a friendly lawyer or have plenty of money to waste to prove the point.

Yeah the reason they're legal is in part is that there have been no cases involving them go through the courts.

You can supposedly get 'legal' radar 'jammers' that instead of emitting a constant signal act as reflective receivers, taking the radar wave and bouncing it back as per normal, but distorting it just enough for the radar system in the police vehicle to not be able to obtain a reading.

Erm, my $250ish Cobra cheapyish radar detector is invisible to both Specter and VG-2 radar detector detectors... (and will also act as a radar detector detector detector for those signals). No idea if that actually works though as NZ police don't have those afaik... :D

Nope. Cobra is almost as bad as whistler in terms of flat out lying about features.

Maybe the old specter (and almost every radar is vg- proof), but the new current model specters can pick up every detecter apart from the sti. Go have a google :)

And anyway, if they become illegal they can spot it on your windscreen  , the XR STi is one/if not the only radar that can be installed and not seen into your car. Check out www.radardirect.co.nz always found them to be good.

I think you mean the Bell XRC. The C means its the hidden, remote verison. IE, the one you install into the car/dash/gill.

That is the same unit as what is in the XR (the hand held unit). So it's hidden from the police detectors aswell.

Far easier than seeing it on the windscreen, all a officer has to do is turn on their radar while following a large amount of cars, and see who hits their brakes instantly, like many people with radar detectors do.

Ahh yeah thats the one i mean, knew it was an XR series anyway. Have to say the one time i got a ticket, the cop noticed me slamming on the brakes, even told me he saw me do it  , and asked me how my radar performs (XR950).

Heh, I've had it for a while now so that figures that the new ones would be sneakier 8)

Just did some research around differen't radar bands.

alot of people say to turn off x and k band.

I did some google around, and apparantly x bands are also used in radio communication etc and "extended AM frequecies".

Wouldn't the cops use radio communication equipments too??

if so wouldn't hurt to keep the x band on if not around city and shopping centres?

Or am I completely wrong?

Never heard of X band being used here, but the new camera vans are digital K band which means high end radars wont pick them up out of the box. My XR950 isnt hard to turn it on anyway.

my xr sti has k band on, always goes off. But I keep it on due to the new camera vans.

Is there a difference between K band and digital K band? Just wondering why you specified digital. I hope my detector still gets them.

Not sure it makes a difference, just read about it being digital. My XR950 picks them up so no need to worry. I usually keep mine off going to work because i know where they hide, but on long trips turn on.

They are digital cameras running on k band :P

I can confirm the sti picks up the new cameras on k band though, so don't worry. However I also agree its a &#^#@ pain in the ass to have it on.

I have it turned off around town, and when I go on a drive out of town I flick k band on then. Once you know the menus its only a 10sec job.

Sweet, thanks for clearing that up. Have zero knowledge on the equipment they use :P

Agree on turning it on/off, can do it without looking now.
