whats a good tyre?

right now that i got the clutch n stuff fixed, next on my list of to do things is a new set of tyres for my next warrent. Just been getting cheapo 2nd hand ones.
so whats a good 225 40 18 tyre? something thats grips well and lasts well.

everyone you ask is gonna tell you something different.

personal experience:

Direzzas: Wear unevenly, good wet and dry grip, been through 2 sets, last about 20,000k's, wouldnt buy them again, too expensive now. And my god the road noise, its like driving a freight train.

GSD3's: Very good wet and dry grip, wear faster than direzzas, are useless when you only have 1/3 tread left (more so than most tires). Retail well above 200 a tyre now.

Hankook K106: Decent grip for the price ($130ish), never ran them more than 2000 k's tho, so couldnt say how the wear over time, not overly loud either.

someone should make a tyre sticky thread. I take it tyres have gotten more expensive? i wouldnt know i havent looked up a price of a tyre for a while. Last time i got some toyos priced for about 225 each, now i wouldnt know.
i probably wont be purchasing nething for about a month neways, but might as well start researching. creditcard will come in handy again

I consistently ran 50k out GSD3s. (4 sets). At 60k they will be like Jean Luc-Picard's head.
They are useless when they are on 1/3 of thread.
I have already done 5k on RE001 and still a lot of thread, the wear is even. I would rate RE001 higher than Chinese GSD3.

tyre pricing has been affected by the change in the value of our dollar vs the US dollar, what size are you after?

the comment about uneven wear on the dz101, i would sugest its not the tyre but a combination of the pressure and wheel alignment, if you are only getting 20k's out of them you musn't be taking very good care of them.

how often do you check your pressures? how many rotations in that 20ks? did you have the wheel alignment done as soon as you had them put on?

for wheel alignments pm pete (tha shz) he is next door to me and does all the alignments for me retail is $75, i believe he does good deals for toyspeed members however.

and he does awesome wheel alignments, my ra1's have lasted a crap load of kms 15k > on his original wheel alignment nearly 2 yrs ago. most people thought i'd only get 5-7k max, and i have driven them hard.

i got quoted over $300 each for direzzas the other day. That was from frank allen tyres i think. (they came round to my work to set up something for the ladys night, i dunno, they were just there so i asked)
