Girl car fans -> all-girls Club - avoiding 'Boyracer' tag

Apart from the stupidity of making the call that 'Boyracers' are all boys (thus the stupidity of the term, but i digress) I particularly flagged on this:

Motorsport Manawatu manager Julian Hardy said young people who were serious about motorsport should join internationally-affiliated clubs like the Manawatu Car Club.

"We think it's a good idea to be part of a club, but you're still a boy racer group if you're not holding motor racing events."


So apparently groups like ours - how old is TS now anyway? - are boy racer groups? Or does one-or-two track-days a year exclude us?

You raise interesting points, but I think you will find that one brush will paint us all.

It should be called the "illegal use of motor vehicles act"

Pretty sure what he's meaning is that the manawatu car club is a Motorsport New Zealand club, toyspeed and other forum groups are not

as above, we're only moderated to who joins by a email address's, clubs like the mcc are moderated by ?interviews and licenses?

I'm not disputing that, but we (Toyspeed) hardly endorse 'boyracer' behavior... why does that make us as guilty as the next group of numpties with a common web url?

not even, as long as you pay them money which you can probably do online or by bank deposit that makes you a member, there is no license that you have to attain to become a member.

So you could pay them money and recieve a membership card by mail without seeing anyone face to face, never do any events through Manawatu motorsport club and get caught street racing a day later. How does that make you less of a boyracer compared to joining toyspeed?

Not quite, you have to be nominated by an existing member of 2 years or more before you can "just pay your money".

Don't get angry about everything you read!!! I was standing next to him when this "journalist" called up and I heard most of the conversation... They just chose to pick a certain part to depict Julian as bad. Poor attempt at a story IMO... They should learn how to write and learn how to listen when interviewing people...

BTW guys, Evolve has only ever had one track event and that was at Taupo. They tried to have one at Manfeild but put it in the too hard basket. 99% of them have never even been on or near a track and 99.99% of them don't belong to any form or MSNZ club or have a race license. It is a forum based club just like TS and just like TS has people who prefer to frequent the illegal scene. That's just the way it is with any forum based car club, you cant control what the people who join it do. Taking one persons opinion without investigating further is not great journalism. Perhaps Palmy TS members should write a letter to the paper regarding this and give them a whole new perspective :?:

This is just another attempt by the media to blow this so called boyracer problem to bigger than what it really is.Now for me there are obviously factions of these groups that are just out of control but portray the whole car loving culture into a big bucket and call them so called trouble makers is just a poor attempt at journalism.

I mean they talk about crushing cars and what not why don't they do the same to Drunk Drivers and for those repeat offending Drunk Drivers who are a much worse then this so called Boyracer problem.

I know of alot of people that are turned off going to track-days because of all the rules.Most who just like doing the odd day here and there just flag because it does seem MSNZ don't make it easy.I mean it seems bare minumun these day is a clubsport licensce and car club membership which is $90 a year in my case and then theres the normal costs of doing the day $200-300 in gas and then there's scrutineering I can see why alot of people do get turned off.

No where near like how the MCC used to run open days pre 2000 turn up pay $10 for a 10-15 minute run it was all fun and games back then and how they got away with that was beyond me but they did and had that going for a few years.

I'd just like to point out the absolute truth in this. And my firm view that Toyspeed only endorses, and encourages, the legal side of being a car enthusiast.

TS'rs who do - as Harlet points out - prefer the illegal scene, really need to re-think their priorities. And they better bloody not wear the TS logo on their cars whilst participating at the local 'drags'... !!

It might be easy to get all grumpy about this, but we don't have any good definition of what a boyracer is. I guess in Julian's eyes, people who want to drive fast should join a MSNZ club and do it properly, those who don't are "boyracers".
Regardless if opinions though, MSNZ clubs generally exist to provide members with racing oportunities. Forum clubs exist to provide online chit-chat, and some form of social networking with the theme being cars.

Neither or which condone blatently illegal and disruptive behaviour in cars... which appears to be the media's definition of a boyracer.

P.S Julian has done a good job of making Manfield available to many for relativly cheap ($60 per dual car sprint)... and this has been good for people who want to play on Manfield in a fairly safe and controlled manner.

My frustration - not really anger - is the way that the article represents the whole story. Of course those with serious speed issues need to be involved in a 'professional' car club - theyre going to be having track days and organised events more often than a group such as ours.

This isn't the same as telling the world that groups such as ours are still at 'boy racer level' when quite obviously:

Sorry but I just don't see TS as a 'boy racer' community. The general feedback that i've observed on here since the term was first coined, shows that the majority of TS strongly dislike the stupidity that the stereotypical 'boy racer' is guilty of. Which is essentially why i'm still involved!

It's all a perception thing really, it's not that hard to get on the track and you don't need a clubsport license. You need a club membership under the current rules but they are able to be given as a "day membership" for a small fee on top of the entry... And soon there will hopefully be a rule that allows anyone to do 2 club days or sprint days (per year) without being a member of an MSNZ club.

I don't see what the big fear of scruiteneering is either. The checks that are done are less than what a WOF is, and you generally get away with small things that don't have certs etc. So long as nothings going to fall off or catch fire you're sweet to hit the track.

:D Those days were quite fun... but each time you entered / watched there were too many things to cringe at. Like groups of guys 5 up in a civic doing handbrakeys and falling off the track.

Alot of people I used to go to the track with just like the idea of turning up with a helmet and going for a thrash and in my view this is just not a viable option now with all the rules MSNZ.To me they have taken alot of people out of the equation and some of these could be these people who have chosen to partake in illegal activities.

All these politicians are all willing to drop the hammer on these groups but provide no viable solutions.WWell if crushing cars is there idea of a solution this just tells me how much idea they really have which is'nt much at all.

Those old open-days were a little on the dodgey side but they were my introduction to track-day fun and again the MCC were the organiser's man I can remember days when there were upto 200 odd cars at the track and upto 20-25 cars on the track at once man that was really fun.

Those types of days were awesome, but that would have been back when the club owned the track... and I also doubt they would have had MSNZ permits for those days. Times have changed and it's far too easy to get cracked down on as an organizer... which sucks.
