4AGE Starter motors - What fits what?

Postby thegreatestben » Mon Jun 01, 2009 10:21 pm

I'm having an issue with the starter motor in my AW11 MR2.
It's running a Blacktop 20v with factory exhaust manifold and oil filter.
Gearbox bellhousing only has provisions for mounting the starter on the exhaust side. Using the 16v starter motor means that the exhaust manifold flange is touching the starter motor, this is not ideal as I think it has played a big part in it's demise.

I bought a 20 valve 4age starter motor which is a much more compact unit, however the bolt spacing is completely wrong.

Is there a smaller starter motor compatible with a c52 exhaust side mount?

Any info on 4age starter motors would be interesting/helpful here.
Did a search first btw.

there is what you need, basically the 20V one with the right bolt pattern.

Its the smallport 4AGE starter, not so common and sometimes hard to find.

All the parts are identical to the 20V one except the front bracket.

Good to know thanks matt.
I'll have to settle for another obese 16v one for now and keep eyes peeled for a smallport one.

This may not apply as I have bugger all knowledge of 20v's.
I had a similar problem when converting my AE82 from 4A carbed to 4AGE, keeping the original gearbox.
After some muching around I put the nose af the original onto the 4AG starter and bingo.
Could try that wih your 20V one?

Yeah if you look at the two, they are completly different in physical size.
Got an early 16v one for now.
