Yes they might have had permits. The best thing about the MSN, or MANZ back when, was the $1,000,000 indemnity insurance should unfortunate things happen. I was heavily involved with car club activities back in the 90's and we use to get permits when we went to the dragstrip even. It wasn't worth the risk if something went wrong.

The crack down on rules is not the fault of MSN but successive government pricks, both voted and permanently appointed, who hate the idea of anyone having fun with their cars (cars are for transportation and nothing else and you should all be taking public transport anyway attitude)

You wouldn't believe some of the BS they come up with. I remember when organisers were made to secure the area of sport and if johnny public could make his way past the sighs warning of a motorsport event and wandered in front of a car and got hurt it would be the car clubs fault. Iirc this nearly happened to some hippy tree hugger at Riverhead circa 1995

If it wasn't for MSN and other interest groups lobbying Wellington things would be a great deal worse. Think Switzerland where Motorsport is banned.

I was around in those days. They were unpermitted.

The odds were pretty high that they were going to kill somebody. Every one I saw ended up with at least one car on it's roof. Was unlucky enough to have to attend one crash where the guy had gone straight into the hairpin tyre wall, and peeled his face open.

There is a reason for safety precautions. When cars go fast, they are more likely to crash hard. People are also mind rootingly stupid. If you don't make them think about their health, practically none of them will. They will go out with 9 people in a Ford Econovan with no springs in it, and drive like a superhero.

People are too stupid to be trusted on a racetrack without somebody with a brain running the day.

Just look at the munters they interviewed on TV the other night from CHCH! Even if they offered free government/council funded trackdays etc to these idiots, they would go. Because:
A) It's during the day, they're sleeping.
B) Not one of the cars I saw on there would be remotely competetive
C) Skids bring fines, To them more fines = more respect.

Send them all with their cars to a deserted town like Lake Alice. They can skid that place up all they like nobody's gonna care. But they probably won't do that either because there's nobody to "impress"

No where near like how the MCC used to run open days pre 2000 turn up pay $10 for a 10-15 minute run it was all fun and games back then and how they got away with that was beyond me but they did and had that going for a few years.

the key thing you seem to be missing here is called SAFETY.
Safety for those on the track, those off the track and for those who are involved in organising the day.
Ever since 2 road cars came to grief with passengers at Pukekohe on a day like that, they have been quached.
To say that you just want to chuck on a helmet and get on the track, says to me that you dont really value YOUR LIFE all that much.
$60 for a clubsport license and $60odd to join your local MSNZ Club isn't all that much when you add up the following safety gear that you should ideally have in your car.
FIA Approved race seat $1000+
Multi Layer flame retardant overalls $400+
FIA or SFI Harness belt $200+
MSNZ Approved Helmet $200+

If you have seen what can happen WHEN you hit something, you'd never WANT to get onto a track without all the APPROVED safety gear.

I don't think what you have mentioned at all I just think there needs to be an in between.Personally I have seen what can happen at a track with and without these safety regulations but for me personally I'd rather see people without the safety gear going hard at a track than on a public road.As in the 10 years i have been doing these days I have seen no one killed or seriously hurt thankfully.

As for the turning up with a helmet and thrashing comment this is how I started out and I don't think i turned out to badly and as I suggested above I'd rather see them thrashing at a track than on a public road.

In my view even without all the safety in which you say I have forgot to mention I still believe the track is the safest place to go hard.

Without all the CORRECT safety gear, if someone gets killed or badly injured at a MSNZ track (which all race circuts in NZ are) the event organiser and or the Track owner/operator is in hotwater.

In this day and age there cannot be an "inbetween".
Cars have changed over the past 20 years, people need to realise that.

Unfortinatly in this day and age of PC

Nothing fun can happen anymore with out:

We attended Manfield open days almost every month a few years back, The closest I saw to an accident was a guy in an old MK1 Cortina with 17 inch wheels on the Higgins corner with 1 wheel having fell off.

Although I did see a van with about 9 people in it with cut springs and arms hanging out trying to drift everywhere but IMO that van shouldn't have been let out in that condition with those people in it.

This is how I started out in motorsport doing these days as have a few friends I've known, IMO you would be better off driving like a nut on the track than on the road and at least tire walls are a little more forgiving than trees, ditches or oncoming cars.

I know its all about the red tape now but I know in my personal experience participating in these days was good to get the inner hoon out of your system

Yes well that is clear but now we have all these idiots out on the street.

I don't disagree with the rules but again there is clearly alot of people who cannot be bothered or all the stuff they need to have to do these days so there needs to be a little more flexibility shown by the powers that be.

Give these so called Boyracer type people a taste and slowly bring them into line with the rules not just throw it at them saying you need this and that because to me you'll lose them for sure and the problems that we are having now have not been solved.I'm not saying this is the best solution but it makes a hell of lot more sense to give it a crack this way then the way its been done now.

I agree here, theres not too much wrong with having an day where you "show up and go", but as we've learnt: No passengers, No Vans, basic safety check, helmet and overalls.

There are still open days like this but they are nowhere near as frequent as they used to be.

Just want to chime in and say that these days are *excellent* if you want to see how you like your car on the track. They cater perfectly to the person who has no idea of where to start or what to do.

yeah they are good, but the old Manfield open day format used to be like $20 for 10-15mins out on the track, I get bored after that and just like to watch the other cars.

$20 seemed less expensive than the $80+ for todays trackdays

These IDIOTS, will NEVER show up to anything where there are rules.

All they want to do is blast around the street, do skids, cause chaos, be seen to 'Be Cool'.

These are the same goons who want 'the council to build a skid pad', want to use it for no charge, with no rules and no regulations. these goons, want to have their cake and eat it to, it aint EVER gonna happen, they just need a slap in the face with a big wet "wake the f*ck up" fish........

AMEN to that.

Matt and myself used to allow any of these types to our SCCC events on the proviso they had a decent helmet, cotton overalls and extinguisher.. no clubmembership or MSNZ licence. the guys that genuinely wanted to change teir wyas, came and played, the retards got kicked out at scrutineering and done wheelies in the carpark all day.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

I reckon you could run a Motokhana / Autocross in the middle of town and most of them would still rather drive past... again and again.

Driving round and round is the easiest way to get rid of boredom without actually having to think of something to do. Skids and racing happen as a product of that.
