Ae86 rear strut tower

Postby rx7guy » Tue Jun 02, 2009 3:47 pm

Hey can anyone tell me if any other corollas (ke70 etc) share the same rear strut tower as the ae85/6?

I am wanting to reinforce my current towers with an extra tower welded on top. If anyone has any they would sell me that would be great too.

V6 capris had that to stiffen them up

why do you want to stiffen the towers?

you could turret them

Ive got d2 adjustables with the spring on the strut, need to be stiffened for cert. This seems to be the cheapest way to do it if I can find towers.

Its either that or replace the adjustables with standard style setup, but im really poor right now, and I would like to get it certified for adjustables all round.

EDIT: What do you mean by turret?

the japanese guys like stitch welding rather then adding another tower, you might run into rust problems later if not protected straight after welding. as thats what made them rust in the rear inner guards and door jams.

rear brace wont do much in the way of what he's after.

my advice, ditch the D2s and get some real suspension

but if you are determined to keep them, then maybe see if a beater can make something fit.

I think I will just have to track down some lowering springs and struts. Those starlet turrets look mighty delictable though. Thanks for the help.

So the certification guy spotted the D2's in the rear and said the mounting point on the car needs to be stiffened or he wouldn't pass it???

makes sense.
from the description the d2s are taking the load from the factory spring area, and putting it through the shock towers.
which were never designed for it

What about the mounting pins on the diff? They're not designed for that kind of load either.

Yeah thats right, he doesn't like all the load going through the mounting point. Just gotta hope the pins are strong enough I guess.

Why not just use decent coil springs and a separate shock in the rear? It'll handle better with TRD springs and some decent heavy shocks.

Ok, I am interested in the seperate shock and spring setup. Who in NZ sells adjustable height springs only?

Like this: http://shift-lock.netfirms.com/modstore ... C_0355.jpg

EDIT: Looks like bc have what i'm after but I'm not sure if they sell individual components.

Yeah thats a good way to do the setup.

Any real reason to go adjustable in the rear? You can still get good handling and height without it.
