As you might have seen i have my toyota celica gt 4ws for sale.

Earlier on today i emailed this guy about a 1984 toyota starlet kp61. Its manual with the 1300cc engine. It has wof and rego and has a nice set of wheels on it

He is actually interested in swapping it for my toyota celica gtr 4ws.
Is the 1300cc engine any good, i mean i want this car to have some fun in and still use it as a road car, what sort of power would i be expecting from a 1.3? Should still be a nippy thing shouldnt it and blow a little tire smoke

my friend brought a kp61 about 2 months ago, he sold his manual GTB for it

Any way, its deathly slow!

They do pathetic skids, i had a ae100 sprinter with a 5a-fe and wow, i thought that was slow, atleast that makes it to 160km\h. We got the kp doing 130ish on the motorway going betwwen jonhsinvill and the city and wellington.

But if your getting a kp, you would want to put a 4a-ge or some thing else in it, hopefully ?

Fun little car, but you will miss the celica imo.

Well you want 3k for yours... i'd say that starlet is worth around the 1.5k mark. (if it was $1 reserved) Both ballpark figures. But i'm pretty sure I know who will get the better end of the deal.

To be honest, if it has very little to no rust, id say its worth 2.5 to 3k, its by no means mint, but starlets are getting rarer and rarer.

tbh just for a change, want to change to an old skool type of car with rwd and something that if it goes wrong, its easier to fix than that got damn celica
Its not so much what to achieve, more of trying something different, ive always liked starlets but never had the thought of owning one until recently.

i didnt know the starlet was only worth that, did try and look at other starlets in the south island with wof and reg and this seemed like a bargain, maybe not then

i can see why people have 'starlet love', they do look more fun than most cars being rwd is a small car and sounds like the 4k isnt too bad for a 1.3

I have been in a similarish boat, as I used to have an MR2 and a KP starlet at the same time.

The MR2 handled awesomely, braked awesomely, accellerated awesomely, alll round, it was a good car.

While I was piecing it together however, I was daily driving a KP starlet.

It had a 1300cc pushrod engine, that made less horsepower than a 3 legged shetland pony.
It had tiny disc brakes up front and tiny drums down the back which barely seemed capable of stopping the car from rolling off the curvature of the earth.
There was nothing remarkable about its suspension, wheels/tires, engine,gearbox, diff, or anything else.

And yet when the MR2 was finished, I literally could not decide which car I would rather be driving.
The starlet was just fun in a way which seemed to defy sense.

So I say... do it!
You will not regret it, especially if you want to learn how to work on cars.

Starlets are the best cars ever, I will definitely own another one before I expire!

those drums may be tiny, but they are one of the best hand brakes i have ever encountered! i started that starlet love thread on GD, and im still driving it. have owned an ae85.6, supercharged mark II and a gtst skyline in that time. all 'better' in their own way - but none have given me the same grin factor as this rusty piece of junk.

easily the worst braking, worst accelerating, worst handling, worst sounding, most fun car i have ever owned.

More starlet love here. For the brief period that I owned one it was the great technical learning experience as well as a adventure to drive.

I've had a few KP's.

They're quite fun to hack around in, but you absolutely must be realistic about what you're getting yourself in for.

So go into it with your eyes open for a couple of things
1) everything rusts
2) they are generally really hard on gas (9-10k/l)
3) they are really very slow cars

However on the positive side ... well, you can have fun at autocross events in them (see my avatar) while driving at 11/10ths. You won't win an autocross though, because they're bloody slow. Also you can drive them everywhere at 11/10ths, and hardly keep up with traffic much less get speeding tickets.

They're a hoot, but they are slow, thirsty, and rusty on average ... I know somebody will pop up and say their one does 15k/l and 200kph silently, while pulling all the hot chicks. But, typically you're looking at a very gutless old 1300 motor from the early 1970's. Be realistic about what to expect. The bit that worried me, was that my Starlet used *more* gas than the Sti I replaced it with.

Would I get another KP? If it was a super tidy one like Snoozin's, hell yes. Otherwise, hell no.

Someone once said that the thing about KP's is that you FEEL like you're doing a million miles an hour, but you're still well within the limits of the law.

Btw, mate of mine recently put a 4AGE in his and now it DOES go a million miles an hour!

Fully don't think its worth that much, but hey i'm not buying it so who am I to judge that 100+ watchers on my auction with 3 people bidding. So I DOUBT he will get his 2.5k asking price or anything even near that.

I wouldn't have one as a daily, unless I could live without a daily. They are reliable as, but all old cars need things fixed more often than newer cars. So take that into consideration. I need a car to get to work so have my Levin and have side 'projects'. Its the safe way imo. If you want to have fun, sure get a starlet, but keep it as your fun car that you can fiddle with and learn from. Not be forced to fix when stuff goes wrong and you need to it get to work / whatever the next day

Haha, yeah rust is a real buzz killer, but there is nothing like seeing an oldschool car driving down the road that has been restored. Well thats what I reckon, newer cars all look the same with their flassy chromes and plastic kits. Give me a fully restored angry sounding oldschool toyota anyday.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to get one if you really want a Starlet. Have you actually driven one? Yea they're fun but not very fast or comfortable compared to a 2 litre Celica. Yea they look mint but that you could do a lot better than that one for what you could sell the Celica for. Rushing into buying an old car is a really, really bad idea. It took me a year to find an AW11 that was up to my standards but it was worth it. A matte black starlet will get you pulled over all the time too…

yeah, you are right, it is hard to beat a nicely done up classic or muscle car etc.

When i had the evo 7, it was just so nice having a car that didnt fog up, had electric everything, all the bells and whistles.

I dunno, i just need to finish my heap, that will change my opinion im sure

for a kp to be worth $3000 it would need a few good bits thrown at it, or be totally mint
if you did a straight swap you would be getting ripped.

they also rust worse than aw11s.
seriosuly i had one that i thought was pretty rust free.
but when stripped it was rusty EVERYWHERE. until it was stripped all you could see was two minor patches.
