Changing silvertop thermostat

Postby TruenoBoy » Wed Jul 07, 2004 11:15 pm

Hey guys I need to replace my thermostat as it is stuck open but am not quite sure how to do it.

Where exactly is the thermostat housing?

Is there a bleed screw?

Is there a gaskit i will need to replace?

I sorta understand how to do it but if someone could write me a few quick instructions on how to do it specificaly for the 4age silver top it would be greatly appreciated. And share any hints or tips.

Cheers all
Regards Sam

dump water 1st, u dont have to but it gets messy otherwise. and it cant hurt to have new coolant anyways. follow the top radiator hose back the the motor. the hose is connected to the thermostat housing. take off hose, un plug nay sensors and unbolt the housing. remove thermostat. if it has a black rubber ring around it take that off and put it on the new thermostat. insert the new thermostat with the spring end pointing inside the motor and make sure the bleed hole is at the top. reassemble using the old gasket if its in 1 piece and good condition or use hi temp silicon. u could also buy a gasket from toyota or tap one out of gasket paper which u can get at repco and the like. once it's all back together fill the radiator with coolant and run the engine until WITH THE RADIATOR CAP OFF untill all the air bleeds out of the system. keep topping the radiator up as the level will drop as air escapes. put the cap on and ur done.
meh.....

actually for the 4age the thermo housing is at the end of the bottom hose..
all 4age thermostats let cool water into the engine, not hot water into the rad as is the case on a lot of other engines, hence the thermostat is on the end of the radiator outlet hose....

Just thought I should check before I do mine, do you need any gasket goo or anything to put on the gasket?

Also how tight do you need to do it back up, is there a torque setting that needs to be used, or is just doing it up tight alright?

Cheers all

5 years!

make sure you get a new o'ring
goes around the thermostat, thats what seals it.
i cannot recall if they have a paper gasket. but pretty sure they dont. but it has been a looong time!

yeah tight, being nipped up by hand with the proper size'd spanner
no need to haul on it!

cool thanks.

Also is the drain plug in the engine near the top or bottom of the engine, and its supposed to be on the left hand side if you're looking at it from the front of the car. Correct?

yeah I know about that one, but I thought there was one in the block too, to empty that out? Or is it okay just to drain the radiator and then fill it with water to flush it, drain again, and then fill with antifreeze/water mix at the correct ratio

I finally had a fine enough day yesterday to do the thermostat & flush, the thermostat change went fine (yup it was the original).
But I couldn't find the bung for the coolant on the bock, so just drained the radiator & did a couple of water cycle flushes, drained it again, and measured out the antifreeze/coolant and distilled water to a 65% ratio, for 5.3 litres that the blacktop manual I found online said. But I only got just over 2 litres of coolant in before it topped out, i ran it for a bit & it went down slightly, so i put a bit of water in, did this a couple of times.

But I'm now worried it will be to much antifreeze/coolant in the engine, and not enough water.

Have I done it wrong?
Can someone point out why it didn't take the 5.3liters of coolant/water the manual said?
Should I worry?

Well unless you completely emptied the whole engine/pipes of coolant there will still be some in there.

So thats probably the balance of the 5.3L.
