what happened to The Dunedin Street race

Postby ke25sr » Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:23 pm

I heard ages ago it was going to miss 1 year then the following year it was to be a 2 day event late in the year.

Can anyone confirm what is happening with it?

from talking to various people it seems the circut needs some safety upgrades to comply.

like high armco all the way up the motorway and prob other places,

id say over a million in upgrades are needed hence the delay.

is that why they're doing work on the bridge by the oval?

It seems quite expensive to fix it, for the cars that race, since they're relatively low powered.

I still remember going as a little kid & there just being hay bales, and 40 gallon drums filled with water in some places, and bikes were allowed to race too. I even remember one year that they had drag racing on the Friday or Saturday night on the front straight

Yeh I remeber the drag racing, so can't have been that long ago, several years no more.

Also, DOCNZ meets in the middle, no more :(

Was talking to one of the organisers ( One of the Reps/Managers @ Armstrong) They went into liquidation.

They will also have huge problems with resource consents as the event had yearly continuation on it & since they have missed one the consent is voided. And was clear see on the last 2 events MANZ were being absolute pricks about the course safety ie: making sure all metal covers & barriers were welded shut and were level with the road. The OSCC well ????

Last time it was almost not put on as they were $100,000's short until the Council & Dippie family coughed some money up .

I don't think it will be back on in a while . Sad really had been going to it for 10+ years . Yeah the drags they did up the main street were cool !!! they did them on Portsmouth Drive as well .

Yeah I knew that it was on a must run yearly resource consent, so figured it would be a no go to get going again.

I think in a way the regs around holding events like this are a shame, in that they make about the same level of track safety for all cars, meaning its almost easier to run full on racing cars than classics, and lower powered club cars.

I've never seen one of those manhole covers come up yet, and its not like they're running high levels of aero to cause it either.
