Anyone with a noise meter?

Postby BZR4AGE » Wed May 27, 2009 12:14 pm

Anyone in Auckland got a noise meter handy?

Just want to measure the nosie of my exhaust to see if it exceeds 95dBA, as I want to go on the track on Pukekohe, but apparantly I cannot exceed that limit at any time.

Cheers

Nobody cares at puke. If your car is able to be driven on the roads without EVERYBODY staring, it's quiet enough. Last time I went I had an empty 2.5 inch pipe off the turbo and you seriously couldn't hear my car in the pits. Had to check it was still idling every so often.

95dba is loud as hell

95 dB isnt loud as hell.

95 dB is:
* Music Practice Room
* Electric Drill
* Walkman at 5/10 (half volume)
* Heavy traffic

I'd imagine Hell is pretty loud. As its all heavy metal and tortured souls

I have one hear at work. pop in and I'll test it for you.

The 95db at Puke is different to the test done for wof/cert because Puke is a passing test were as the WOF is a static test. Static test always read louder.

They do care at puke, i would know, had a straight through exhaust on my 162. Couldnt run again unless i could reduce it.

I have a meter at work too if anyone is in papakura clevedon area and wanted to give it a shot.

But does anyone know the regulations on how to measure it, is it 3m back on a 45` angle?

Yes, but IIRC it's the noise of screeching tires that was the point of annoyance with drift days.

Point is, i dont wanna turn up after driving 45 minutes (Ok, fine 20 :lol: ) to get told i have to turn around. Dont have a silencer for it etc, nor a smaller tip.

N/A are abit louder than Turbo's though, if both were to have straight pipes.
The compressor acts as a muffler.
I put a straight through exhaust with one resonator on my old BZR and got 98dB, a tad too loud.

all race tracks in NZ are 95 or 96 dba at 30 metres right angle under full load, that means if you are directly behind the car and its under full load, its FRIGGIN loud!!!!

lol funny thread..

I got my legnum knocked back twice for a warrent because of a loud exhaust system, How the measure it plays a huge part..

they rev it to 3k rpm and then 5k rpm. if it peaks over 95db youre failsauce.

My 1st atempt was 106db, only because the dumb ass measured the noise just inside a warehouse. and had the rear of the legnum poking towards the garage door.. and to make matters worse, there was a strong wind that we blowing the noise back into the garage.

106db due to the bad moron not knowing how to measure etc...

2nd atempt was 95db and i failed... some "new" law.. but looking back my 97 legnum passed on that one.

so i went to my family garage where i have gotten wofs for years, and he told me it only peaks over 95 when they button off from 5k rpm.

he passed it.

actually 95db is not that loud at all.

I got a green sticker for my exhaust being too loud (silencer wasn't it, my bad) so put it in went for wof, he said it wasn't that loud but since it got green stickered for it. will pay to go get it tested.

So today i went in to LVV Certifier to get my exhaust tested. Silencer in, mic setup properly at right distance, engine at 4000rpm tested at 95.2db, now the very upper most limit for the static test is 95.4db, so i JUST scraped in.

$200 later i now have a completely legal exhaust, with sticker on the muffler and a sheet i have to keep in the car at all times, although the silencer HAS to be in for it to be legal on the road. But now a cop has no grounds to give me a ticket for it as long as silencer is in, and on the sheet it states that silencer must be fitted.

He was rather suprised that the lack of mufflers in passed, 2.5in dp into straight 3in with a cannon muffler and silencer :P without silencer it's 117db at 4k with no load

Apparently the static one (which i did) is more repeatable, and one i got tested with was $14,000 worth of kit. Apparently the warrant places that have them are only like $500 ones but their margin of error is alot, hence when a warrant place tests them they can't be louder than 93db,

So thats from my experience today at lunch time.

Oh, and my exhaust is certed, how many people on here have theirs done?

I tested mine the other day 93 db @ 4000rpm 500mm inline from the tip

4AGZE, One coby and rear muffler..

To me it didn't sound that loud at all, it was getting like 86 db at idle.
