2TGR rebuild time, ---what mods to do ---???

Postby lynxgypsy » Sat Jun 20, 2009 4:14 pm

i have searched and searched the net for recommended mods to 2TGR but as most seen to be stroking their engines it is of no use to me. I want the cc rating kept under 1600cc as car races in that class T&C group3..

so it seized, i have a brand new crank and another head with cams.

The other cams has the specs as follows (i don't understand cam specs!!)
camlift in/ex .460"
duration in/ex 284
cam timing 38-66 / 74-30
valve lift inlet .452"
valvelift exhaust .450"
tappits inlet .008 / ex .010

remarks - fair idle. power range 2500-6500 redline 7500rpm, excellent mid range powercam. Increased compression will help.

Ok so i intend to rebuild around these cams, so what recommendations as to other mods?

Port / polish?
larger valves? this already has the 45.3 in / 38.5 ex
Is it worth spending time polishing rods etc?
lightening flywheel? i'm guessing a good move but any ideas how much to
take off it and where? (got mate with a lathe)
balancing?

also, what are the best brands to use as far as bearings / rings etc go? Also sources for parts, getting old now..

the old toyota motors are quite good so not sure how far to go, i don't want to spend 1000's but want a quick reliable motor.
its me !!

i was under the impression that the ports and valves were already pretty big on these motors.

They are pretty huge, but definately gains to be had shaping and tidying them up. Can always use bigger valves
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Wow only $1000.00

I spent around more than that on just the head.

balance is a must,
high compression in these can break the iron rings so use Chrome, I think we use Mitsi rings of some sort,
Hard to find a bigger valve to fit because the stem is 8.5 mm and there huge anyway.

what caused it to seize?
2t-gr quite hard to get genuine parts from toyota due to age but they possibly still list the later 2tgeu parts from ta61 and te71 which have alot of similar parts.
i buy NDC and ACL bearings/gaskets via staparts.co.nz website. the bottom conversion set has the crank seals, sump seal, timing cover seal etc. currently waiting for next shipment to arrive from aus.
can also import parts from the likes of www.brdracing.com or stuart wilkins motorsport.
a lightened flywheel definately helps as these things are sluggish in std form compared to modern engines. if you have the 2tg flywheel that has the solid back face then these are HEAVY. the later 2tgeu have a lighter fly and the 3tgte is lighter again (8kg) but has bigger 225mm clutch. can also use 1g 6cyl flywheel which is same spec as a 3tgte. aftermarket fly also available like the fidanza alloy ones. 5-6kg should make an improvement without affecting idle too much.
i would look into replacing the valve springs when you do the cams. can't expect 30yr old springs to be in perfect condition. if you plan to rev this this to make power then like ke25sr says.. get the bottom end balanced.. crank, fly, clutch plate. cost a few hundy but good way to keep things in one piece!

i use to race a te27 over her in oz and on pump fuel we only ran 10.5 to 1 comp as they use to ping also put better rod bolts in the rods ,if you find a later crank from say te71 levin they were fully conter balanced with even weights right through ,much better also used 44mm mikunis with 37mm chokes
on cams that you have what are they at 50 thou duration as i need to know so you can work it from there
the 2tgr motor was a low comp motor with 8.8 to 1 so it could use 91 octane
there is also a site in japan that makes parts for these motors
kameri makes adjustable cam sprokets .a fully gear kit so dont need a bottom chain and the top big damper has a gear in its place etc ,but these are not cheap
its kameri motor works in japan
