Engine swap into Hiace

Postby cat007 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:42 pm

Hey all

I have a 1987 Hiace (YH63) and it has a 4Y in it.

The engine runs MINT! And being a 2.2L it has a fair bit of up n go - but it's not exactly powerful.

I'm wanting something with a little more grunt - so I can tow a car (I imagine the 4Y might struggle....?)

Any suggestions for an easy engine swap?

Please don't suggest a 1UZ lol

2UZFE? At least it'll be a bit different to the norm!

Wanting to stay toyota power? Work mate helped his uncle put a commy V6 into his Hiace, recons it goes really well (puts jet ski's in the van and on a trailer behind)

Why not? Superchargers are good for towing!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yeah I know - good low end torque - hence why I was thinking about it....

Although I'm not sure about the length of the 1G vs the van's engine bay etc....

would have thought an L6 would make a tight engine bay even worse.
what about the 3.4V6 prado engine??

They sound like they're late model engines - and will be pretty pricey....?

mid-90's.
shouldn't spend over 1800 to buy, and seemingly bolt up to Y, S,C bellhousing.
engine code could be 5VZ?? someone like STRX7 will know

hmmm

$1800 was a bit more than I was wanting to spend. Maybe I'm asking to much to not want to spend more than $800 on an engine - especially when I wont be able to just dump it in. I guess I'd need to upgrade brakes for the cert etc etc...

when there was much debate whether it should be allowed as a super/stock engine for speedway, there was talk of them being as cheap as $5-600.
another option would be an RZ engine as fitted to 96+ hiace/hilux

5vzfe with ecu and loom is definitley going to set you back around $1800-2000

Every possible engine I can think of for transplanting is later model efi and going to cost $$$

unless of course you put in a ...................... rover 3.5 v8 :? :? :?

Yeah - I guess I was being a bit daft to thing I could find an engine with decent pull to tow a car for under $800 :(

Rover V8's are a bit past it now, aren't they?

yip.much debate over whether quad-cam multi valve engines should be introduced.
i know of 2.5V6(1vz??) cheap, but not ready for removal from car yet. ordered off the road due to major structural faults.
