Oil Changes

Postby BZG Wagon » Fri Jun 26, 2009 9:12 pm

When should I change the Diff & Gearbox oil in my GTT?

Cars done 125kms. I've had it 2 years / 30kms. Not sure if it's ever been done before? Gearbox seems sweet (changes nicely) - but some preventitive maintanance can't be bad thing.

Is it easy to do yourself (i.e. any more difficult than a regular oil change) or should I not risk stuffing it up & take it to Toyota?

Assume its never been done before. It is a good idea to change it incase (probably 90% chance) it hasn't been done 8)

Someone else can comment on the difficulty, i'm sure if you can spin a spanner you can do it yourself though :)

If its anything like the GT4 (which i have no doubt its the same) then its very easy. Basically theres 2 drain bungs (1 on box, 1 on transfer case iirc). Drain both, then open filler hole on side of box. Fill until it overflows.

As long as you get the plugs right, and fill till it comes out theres very little that can go wrong :)

ALWAYS open the fill bung, BEFORE the drain one.

Helps reduce vacuum inside the box, to let al lthe fluid drain smoother, but mainly, its so that you dont dump all the fluid and then find the fill bung is welded in or something silly.

Ahh good point. I found that out the hard way with my sisters starlet (EP82). Ended up having to fill it through one of the bolt holes on top

I do mine every 30,000 or 2 years.

Redline MT90 $130 for 4L
or Valvoline Duragear $60 for 4L

Not sure if the GTT has same gearbox as MR2, but should be similar spec.

We are talking Manual not Slushbox ? Can do yourself but I find it easier to pay $60 for someone else and not have the hassle.
