AE82 Ltd edition ?

Postby KINGT » Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:44 pm

hey i recently bought a "85 ae82 fxgt off a mate and hes told me its a ltd edition model which i would have no idea if its true or not lol hes told me the red cloth interior and rear leather seat are some of the factors which make this the ltd edition model. im not sure which engine these come with from factory but it also has apparently had a heart transplant and when it hits 4500rpm it flies whereas the original engine had a bit more zip in the lower rev range so im told? its still a 1600 and i think he told me it was a blacktop ? just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on these cars and whether the info ive received could be correct? i'll post a pic of it shortly aswell

cheers
theres gonna be alota slow singin and flower bringin if my car alarm starts ringin........

Cant comment on the interior, but every sounds like a standard TVIS bluetop, hence the 4500 RPM change, nothing special under the hood sorry mate.

*Edit* And "Flies" isnt the term Id use to describe what happens at 4500.....

Probably doesn't go better above 4500, probably just goes worse under it.

We had a car where the TVIS was faulty/not working,
and foot flat from 1200rpm, and when it got to 4500 it would break traction in the wet, and that was just because of the lack of power down low, not because it had more than normal up top.

And there was some funny model that had weird red seatbelts and interior etc, but dont remember what the story was.

nzgt's had red seatbelts, but most had leather seats.

could be an fxgt ltd which did come out, I think it was just to do with power windows and mod cons though. My parts car is an fxgt ltd

post a pic of the engine bay too and we will tell you what engine you've got

it could easily have the rear seat from an NZ new

or it could be a NZ new with the front seats replaced, never seen a pair that werent screwed

PC's autocross car is a FXGT Ltd edition AE82 (or at least it was badged as that). In his particular car stuff it had that seemed different to me from my old AE82 GT (nz) .... usual cloth interior, but digital dash, power steer, air con, electric sunroof. Mechanically it was just the usual AE82 though.

Spotting NZ new ... not 180k speedo, red carpets, leather seats, badging obviously, and look at the build plate to see if it is NZ (off the top of my head).

You've got a bog stock NZ built AE82GT as compared to the Japanese domestic market FXGT. Yes, it has T-Vis, just like every other big port 4age.

Somebody has replaced the GT leather front seats with FXGT cloth seats, most likely because the leather seats have conked out (they didn't stand the test of time at all well).

Sorry dude, your friend has been selling you a tall tale.

its not supposed to do that, chances are something is not right. there is definite change over point when the tvis butterflies open, but its not like the thrown back in your seat feeling you seem to be describing.

Rear leather seat is funny.

I thought Jap spec has a lower rev limit. Also the jap spec Ltd has power steer rather than a manual steering rack.

All NZ gt corollas had leather interior. With the 5 door of 183 made had two option of brown leather. The 3 door had grey leather and red seat belts with matching red carpet. The 5 door had power steering and better handling and was around 10K more than the 3 door. From about may 86 on the 3 door had a front spoiler. The only front spoiler you could get for the prefacelift was a foho one. The spoiler was originally designed for the 5 door at the DSIR research lab in wellington. Chris amon did the handling on the NZ Gt's. Jane beck did the interiors. NZ GT corollas will have a AMQ plate on the radiator support pannel that will match up to the build plate on the firewall to denot build number. NZ Gts' have GT fast back wheels. Non colour coded bumpers and sideskirts (that were also an option on the 5 door) have the 240K speedo, Don't have twincam on the steering wheel, don;t have orange lettering on the gearknob. Grille headlights, bonnet etc are different. Other subtle interior changes. NZ gt's have a rev limit of 8,500rpm.

The seats didin't last long. Becuase they used inferior NZ leather. My Mi16 had done over 300K with european leather and seats were mint. The leather used was also thin. So it used to dry out and streatch. Causing cracks to turn into rips and tears. Putting seats covers on was the worse thing you could do as the sweated and stuffed them.

from the cars i've had, the nz new ae82 gt's had leather seats all round, red seatbelts/carpets 240kph speedo, no oxy sensor. all the jap import ae82's i've seen have been just the standard fx-gt.

all the jap fx-gts i've seen have had power steering, normal greyish interior/belts/carpet etc.

don't know much myself about the 5 door versions though.

but the 2 door hatchbacks have always been a favourite car of mine, i saw a completly mint nz new sell last year or the year before, completly mint carpert and seats, rust free with an awesome (factory looking) paint job. went for about 5 k too! would have paid it if i had the money and the space for another car.

AE82 NZ GT's

Postby Allister S » Thu Jul 02, 2009 2:00 pm

Can anyone else confirm the 8500rpm rev limit of a NZ GT?? Seems really high - isn't this higher than a factory Black top 20V?

I could try mine but it has 300,000kms on the engine!

Cheers, Al

My NZ AE82 GT (1984) had the rev cut at the indicated redline which was 8200rpm.

My nz gt ae82 5 door has the limit at 8500 but thats with a different motor and computer so not really much use. I'm pretty sure that the standard ones were 8200 as leon said, the guy who had the car before me with the original motor said the limit was 8200 and it used to spend a fair amount of time near that before the motor finally cried enough
