1G-GTE Fuel pump issues..

Postby heinrich » Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:53 am

Hey guys - My 1st post on Toyspeed!

I'm in the process of transferring all the 1G-GTE running gear into a MA63 Celica XX

Progress of the build so far can be seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irZLyqx0hAQ

My problem is that my fuel pump is wired up directly at the moment - so straight off idle I get way too much fuel into the engine..

Can anyone here tell me what the resistance is for the fuel pump resistor from a 1G-GTE?

I'm planning to get a Walbro in the next few weeks - but was told that I'l still need a resistor..

Is this correct?

Incorrect.
Resistor is optional to save fuel pump (increase it's life time).
Fuel pump is not controlled electrically to control amount of fuel supplied.
The only control is there (apart from injectors) is the fuel pressure regulator.
If you bypass the resistor it should not run richer.
If it runs richer (what are the actual symptoms?) then you have another issue entirely.

Ah - thanks for the quick reply..

So I don't need the resistor at all?

I'm finding that my spark plugs are basically black after only a couple of minutes idling and its running really rich on idle - misses and splutters a little - but runs fine at higher rpms..

No error codes on ECU..

Is it MAP sensored or AFM?
no vacuum leaks, split hoses or leaky BOV?
Are you using standard injectors?
Checked your fuel pressure?

Using factory AFM and ECU
Using factory injectors

I will check fuel pressure and vacuum lines and get back to you.. I have just done front mount install - so I'll double check for any leaks in there as well..

Thanks for the help! Really appreciated!

Hi there

I ran my 1G wired directly (12volted) for years on the stock ECU and it was perfectly fine.

Check to make sure the pulsation damper is ok. I may have a spare and a spare stock FPR. Where are you located?

Could be a sticking injector - dumping in too much fuel.

Is it ok when you're driving along at lower RPM? Or is it only ok at higher RPM?

Also - does the ECU throw any codes?

Ah true..

I'l check the pulsation damper tonight.. and let you know.. Might be interested in those spares.. I'm located in CHC..

Think I'l get the injectors checked out as well just to be sure..

The only error code I get is TPS (CODE 41) related - but I think thats due to it not being calibrated as yet? I've got hold of the TSRM so I'l go through that first for TPS trouble-shooting..

Atleast I've got a few things now I can check out.. So I'l get onto it and get back to you guys..

Cheers for all the help!

TPS could be a partial cause...

definitely

If the ecu thinks the throttle is at 10% it'll chuck in a heap of fuel compared to what it should be getting at idle or 1-2%....

it might be ok further up the rev range as the engine wont be as sensitive to fuel changes - it may still be running rich but you just might not notice it as much.....

Come to think of it AFM and TPS are part of same network of potentiometers in early ECUs, so TPS will definitely affect the fuel mixture. That is if your TPS is potentiometer (it could be a switch then it should not affect much).
