Toyota Vitz Help

Postby BZR4AGE » Tue Jun 30, 2009 9:43 am

Hi Guys, I recently purchased a 2000 1.0 Toyota Vitz as a work car.

Its got the 1SZ-FE engine. Its done 83,000ks and is a fresh japanese import.

A few questions I would like to ask

1) The engine sounds like a diseal at very low rpm when the car is moving. but it sounds perfectly fine at higher RPM. it almost sounds like detonation. How do I fix this? what is the likely cause? I know the car engine oil been changed in the car yard, but i suspect they will use cheap stuff. So I am intending to give it a good service myself with good oil and filter and air filters and sparkplugs etc etc. Another thing that comes to mind is that in Japan the minimum octane they run is 100, maybe it needs a tune for NZ petrol?

2) Just yesterday night, the rear lights set on the right hand side stop functioning (brake light, reverse, and indicator). I am sure is not the bulbs becuase when I switch the bulbs to the left side it works perfectly fine. I was fiddling around trying to find a fuse box, but could't locate it, and out of no where the lights started working again! Any ideas?

3) Its got a factory stereo.

I would like to purchase a new stereo for it. How do i do it?

Cheers in advance guys

what kind of fuel are you putting in it? 98 should be sufficient to deal to any pre-ignition issues on a standard car.

bad earth possibly on the lights? im just guessing really :D fuse would definitely be the first thing to check though!

as for the stereo, might pay to check with an installer - maybe theres some kind of aftermarket pod you can get that will accept normal DIN stereos.

i hate cars that make changing the headunit a PITA

(PS 88.6 is fail! newstalk ZB ftw on non band expanded radios :P)

Thanks Rollaholic!

hahaha, the 88.6 is not me, i just grabbed that pic from trademe.

I think is running 91 at the moment, because we got free tank of fuel with the purchase, so i doubt they would put 98 into it.

look at where the throttle body mounts to the intake manifold. the seal/o-ing being faulty can cause the tractor sound at idle.

re: stereo, seems to be a thing with carmakers in recent year to make the factory stereo a more integral part of the interior. Check to see if it has an auxiliary input, this way you can wire in a standard headunit, the only problem will be finding a tidy place for the headunit to go.

+1 for ZB on nonband extended radio, still rolling that stz in the caldina.

 A few crazy bastards over the ditch have done it.....but totally not worth the hassle

Would also recommend you pick up plug in looms when you get a fascia kit too, just to make your life easier and also you can swap it back if you want when you sell

lucasthefallen - the sound don't come at idle, the car is perfectly fine at idle and at higher rpm...i don't have a tacho on the car, but i assume above 2000rpm?

so it happens between 1000-2000rpm (roughly), and usually just when i push really lightly on the accelator...like keeping up with speed while I am on the motorway kinda thing.

Hope you can understand me LOL

Have you given the motor a good flush out? Being a fresh import, it might not have much of a good servicing history. You never can be too sure these days. I've seen some rather nasty pictures of engines with the cam cover removed, with sludge and caked on oil all over it.

Hey Crampy!

Yea I intend to give it a very good service myself this coming weekend. So hopefully it will solve the problem!

Btw, anyone know what type of engine oil and gearbox oil I should use on this car?

It didn't came with the user manual, so I am at a lost!

Cheers

Hey man.
I'd bet this car is a bit slower than the BZR beast hahaha.
Probably a good time to get a new Computer for it and tune it up 8)

I'd just run some Castrol GTX or Magnatec in the Vitz. That's what I put in all my cars these days.

LOL, it is considerably slower! especially I am carpooling with 4 of my mates, so is PRETTY SLOW at up hill. maybe I should chuck a Link in my BZR and use the e-manage on the Vitz LOL!
