SW20 Steering knock.

Postby Alex B » Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:59 pm

I’m getting a knocking in my steering. I had mistaken it for a suspension knock, but on further inspection it seems to be some play in the steering. For anyone familiar with SW20’s, there is a UJ you can access from under the bonnet area, it is before that, you can shake the UJ and feel movement above it but seems to be below the steering colum. Has anyone had this fault before I go ripping it apart, if so what parts were required to fix it.

See link:

I’m thinking it is 45865-20010 may be the answer.

In other news, replacing the alternator in an SW is a cnut.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I had to do the one in mine yesterday. Its the second time I've had to do one, and it didn't make it any much more fun to do :P

Theres only one place you can take the alternator out, directly above where it sits. And you have to remove the bracket to be able to get it out, and getting the bracket back on by feel is a pain in the ass, and it weighs like 10 million kg. Well, maybe more like 10kg, but its still a pain. And it goes on a slope, so once you get it on, you have to sort of make sure its caught on the thread of the bolts, otherwise it'll come right off.

My vocabulary was very colourful yesterday :P

Oh, and the earth terminal size is different on the turbo vs the NA alternators, which mean't I had to make up an adaptor bracket thing.

Mine came out the top

Since were bitching about how difficult mr2s can be... Tinted my car last week, went fine until it came to the rear window. At first I thought it was a straight curve so it would be easy as

Then when it came to tinting it and noticed its not straight but its on a lean inwards..... PAIN

Nahh, you can't get it out the bottom, the subframe, drive shafts and exhaust are in the way.

Not to mention that the turbo and NA brackets are different as well.

Yea, that tinting sound like a PITA!

I can get to it from the bottom, although I didn't need to "take it out" tho. *Touch wood*

I think custom exhaust helps? Dunno, never needed to service the damn thing except "hooking it up"
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Where abouts? I can't figure it out. Its a moot point anyway, I had to take off the bracket to swap it with a turbo model bracket, which is slightly larger.

the common parts on toyota columns to go are the u/js (all/any of then) the bearing and the bush (45273)
when you say play, do you mean twisting (ie ujs) or up and down or side to side?

as for the collar part, can honestly say i never had anything to do with one of those
