sw20 coolant leak

Postby thornz » Sun Jul 05, 2009 3:48 pm

Well, we went for a drive out to oxford yesterday for lunch. Was fine on the way there. However when I got back to chch, I noticed as i got back home and stopped the car, there was a shit of steam coming form the engine bay. How long this had been going on for dunno, as the air flow must have been just blowing it straight out without any steam in the mirrors. So popped the hood, and could see the coolant was spraying onto the manifold causing the steam/smoke. On closer look, it looks as though it was coming from one of the piped going into teh turbo? But is bloody hard to be sure, there was a fine jet either coming from, or squirting away onto the pipe ( as shown in photos below) So could that be the culprit? Are they coolant pipes for the turbo? I let it cool down over night, and have just been out, have topped up the coolant, only took about a litre or so which I am hoping is a good sign. On the way home, the engine was running in its normal temp range, so there were no signs of this until I stopped. Without removing the pipe, I cant be sure that its the culprit, but has anybody had a issue like this before? Should I be alright to drive it to the mechanics sometime this week?

woudn't think that the water feed would be the culprit, possibly the hose from hell, i would be hoping like anything that its not the case!

google hose from hell if you haven't heard of it

oh dear, the hose from hell doesn't sound good.

edit: do those water pipes only have water in them? It was definitly green coolant spraying, so if they are just water, I guess I can rule them out?

No, like all pipes in the coolant system they have coolant in them ;)

As stated above it's most likely the "hose from hell" or it's close relative. Either way it's not a nice job. If you plan on doing it yourself allow 6-8hrs, a lot of frustration and quite a few skinned knuckles

I heard that if the hose from hell broke during the warranty period of an mr2/gtfour then Toyota just replaced the entire car

If thats the one that sits behind the exhaust manifold, then yes. Its a bastard to get to.

I know someone that left a hose clamp off theirs after putting the manifold and turbo back on....
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

They say it's possible to do it with the turbo still attatched, I wouldn't tho, take the turbo off and save the skin on your knuckles and your back.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Before I go to the hassle of tempting fate with the hose from hell. Is there anyway I can check to be sure it is the culprit?
